Anthony Gordon scored his third Premier League goal of the season on Wednesday evening to help Newcastle United gain a point against his boyhood club Liverpool.

Gordon found the net in the 62nd minute at St James’ Park with a low finish from nine yards after beating Reds defender Joe Gomez with a tight turn.

That goal gave Newcastle a 2–1 lead, but the match eventually finished 3–3, with Newcastle needing a last-minute equalizer from Fabian Schar.

Gordon’s goal was very well received, but many Newcastle fans enjoyed his celebration even more.

The 23-year-old celebrated by using his hands to mimic chatty mouths in response to all the talk about him in the build-up to the match.

Gordon’s form had been the subject of much discussion prior to the match.

He was also the subject of transfer talks during the summer.

Gordon grew up on Merseyside as a Liverpool fan and played for the Anfield club as a junior before being released at the age of 11.

He later joined Everton where he made 65 Premier League appearances before moving to Newcastle in January 2023 for £40 million plus £5 million in add-ons.

Gordon was heavily linked with a return to Anfield earlier this year.

It is understood he would have been keen to make the move, but his hopes were ultimately dashed by Liverpool’s unwillingness to go beyond Newcastle’s minimum asking price of £80m.

Less than two months after the summer window closed, Gordon signed a new two-year contract with Newcastle.

Commenting on the way he celebrated his goal on Wednesday night, Newcastle fan and journalist Andy Sixsmith wrote on X (formerly Twitter): ‘I enjoyed this celebration from Anthony Gordon. Lots of talk. That performance was his answer. Back to his excellent best tonight. And he just loves a goal against the top teams in the Premier League!’

Another Magpies fan wrote: ‘Loving this celebration from Gordon tonight.’

A third added: ‘That Gordon celebration was for Craig Hope and no one else’ – referring to Mail Sport’s North-East football and England correspondent.

But not everyone enjoyed Gordon’s party. One Liverpool supporter tweeted: ‘Anthony Gordon with his pathetic celebration, he’s clearly hurt that we turned him away.’

Wednesday’s draw against Liverpool moved Newcastle up to 10th in the Premier League, above Manchester United, who were beaten 2-0 at Arsenal.

Newcastle are now level on points with ninth-placed Brentford ahead of a visit to the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.
