Newcastle took Fabian Schar’s history of concussion into account before deciding to leave him out of yesterday’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City.

Doctors decided not to take a chance on the Swiss defender after he collided with Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez in last weekend’s Carabao Cup final defeat, despite him completing the game at Wembley.

Schar was involved in a serious concussion incident while playing for his country in 2019 when he was knocked unconscious.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe explained his absence at the Etihad.

‘He took a nasty hit in the eye and was cut and bruised around that area (at Wembley). He did some tests with the doctor and we learned quite early in the week that he would not be available today.

‘The doctor has been with us a long time and knows Fabian’s story. All of that is taken into account with the concussion protocol that we will follow to the letter.

Schar was sidelined for a few seconds during a match after a head butt against Georgia in 2019, but remarkably continued to play after five minutes of treatment.
