Newcastle: Chilling images emerge of teen charged with planning terror act after wearing ballistic vest and allegedly brandishing a knife at politician’s office

Chilling footage has emerged from the livestream of a teenager allegedly brandishing a knife in an MP’s office as part of a planned terror attack.

Emergency services were called to the Newcastle Museum in Honeysuckle, near the city’s CBD, at around 12.30am on Wednesday after reports of a man dressed in tactical gear, including wearing a helmet and ballistic vest.

Police arrested 19-year-old Jordan Patten of Raymond Terrace, who was charged Thursday morning with “other acts committed in preparation for or planning an act of terrorism” by the Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT).

The teenager is said to have broadcast the attempted attack live via video website Twitch, with a camera strapped to a helmet.

Footage from the livestream shows the man in a bathroom at Newcastle’s Civic Theater before crossing the road and entering Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp’s office.

He then quickly left the office and walked towards the museum in Workshop Way, where a member of staff told him ‘you can’t be dressed like that’, before raising the alarm.

The employee watched the man as he entered the building and told him, “You need to leave (because you’re) dressed like that, sir.”

“Please come out for us.”

The livestream then shows the man leaving the museum and placing his knife and bag on a chair before the doors are locked behind him.

The man behind the camera doesn’t say a single word throughout the entire seven-minute video as he leisurely walks between locations.

A statement from NSW Police confirmed that a ‘number of items were seized’ when he was searched and will be taken away for further analysis.

“After further investigation, police have become aware of the existence of a document that has been distributed to a number of public figures and media outlets,” the statement read.

“There is no ongoing threat to the community relationship with this investigation.”

In a statement released after the arrest, Crakanthorp said he understood there was “an incident in Newcastle today.”

“I have spoken to the police and they are managing the situation and have assured me that no one was injured,” he said.

“I was told the individual briefly walked in and out of my office and left before making any contact with my staff.”

The teenager is said to have briefly entered the office of Labor MP for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp (pictured) before leaving and walking leisurely to the museum.

Patten sat calmly during a brief appearance at Newcastle Local Court via video link on Thursday.

Magistrate Anthony Spence said there were “strong undertones” of mental health issues when reading the charge and facts in this case, the Daily telegram reports.

Patten’s legal aid attorney, Martin Vazquez, told the court his client would not be seeking release.

The teen was booked into jail and was scheduled to appear in court again on August 21.

No pleas were required to be entered.

Patten’s older brother and aunt expressed their “sincere apologies” to anyone who witnessed his alleged actions, as well as their shock at the news.

“We just hope he can get the help he needs,” Patten’s brother told the media during a brief appearance outside their family home.
