Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell oversaw Burnley’s James Trafford over the weekend as the club considered a new approach for the England Under-21 goalkeeper.
Mail Sport exclusively revealed in June that Eddie Howe’s team had unsuccessfully submitted a bid of around £16million for the Burnley goalkeeper.
Talks were already underway, but the Clarets reportedly wanted a transfer fee of around £20million for Trafford.
Howe sees him as a key addition to compete with first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope as Trafford’s contract with the Lancashire club expires in 2027.
The 21-year-old left Manchester City for Burnley in July 2023 for £19million, but has endured a difficult season in England’s top flight.

After making 28 league appearances, Vincent Kompany decided to drop Trafford from his starting line-up in March in favour of Arijanet Muric.
“It is one of the positions where I have the luxury of having two good players, which allows me to make a decision at any time that I think is best for the team,” said the Belgian national coach.
“It’s not a big decision, it’s not a difficult decision. It’s just two good players competing against each other and I’ll use that luxury in as many positions as possible.”
Trafford, a graduate of Man City’s youth academy, made his England U21 debut in June 2022 in a 5-0 win over Kosovo.
He has since earned 17 caps and played in every match of England’s 2023 U21 European Championship triumph, without conceding a single goal throughout the tournament.
