Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund fans have clashed on the way to St James’ Park ahead of tonight’s Champions League group stage match.

A video circulating online shows two opposing fans exchanging punches over a railing separating home and away fans.

Another fan, who appears to be wearing a Borussia Dortmund scarf, throws a punch, while a Newcastle supporter steps on the railing but is pulled away by police.

Meanwhile, another video showed the huge police presence as Borussia Dortmund fans marched towards the stadium.

Police had promised a visible presence in Newcastle city center ahead of tonight’s match after trouble previously flared before the Magpies’ 4-1 win over PSG at St James’ Park on October 4.

Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund fans clashed before their Champions League match

Borussia Dortmund fans were marched to the stadium surrounded by a large police presence (no indication that any of the supporters pictured were involved in clashes)

Police had promised an increased presence ahead of tonight’s match after problems ahead of Newcastle’s clash with PSG earlier this month

On that occasion, supporters were seen walking past each other with police between them as a number of objects, including bottles and flares, flew through the air.

On that occasion, a PSG fan was also seen punching a Newcastle supporter as fans of the French club marched towards the stadium.

Borussia Dortmund fans were also planning to march before tonight’s match, leading Northumbria Police to insist there would be a ‘proportionate police response’.

Fan marches are a common aspect of European supporters’ challenges and can sometimes lead to the two groups of supporters clashing before kick-off.

Newcastle will be looking to follow up on their excellent win over PSG last time out in the Champions League.

The Magpies are top of the ‘Group of Death’ and have also recorded a goalless draw on their trip to San Siro to play AC Milan.
