Newcastle and Aston Villa played a thrilling 3-3 friendly draw in Philadelphia as part of the Premier League Summer Series.

Ollie Watkins kicked off the goal fest when he scored the first goal of the game after just over five minutes had passed, quickly followed by Emi Buendia who finished the match with not one but two goals to his name.

Newcastle were able to fight back despite being frustrated early on by Villa’s compact defense and scored two goals of their own to tie the game in the first half thanks to goals from Anderson and Alexander Isak.

Shortly after half time after the teams took the field for the second half, Buendia was in front of an open net when a bouncing ball fell to him in the penalty area, followed some 10 minutes later by Callum Wilson’s equalizing goal.

Sandro Tonali, the star of the summer, had a very quiet game as he appears to be adjusting to his new environment at Newcastle, while new signing Harvey Barnes made his debut with around 20 minutes to play.

New Newcastle signing Harvey Barnes made his debut with 20 minutes to play

Barnes was able to make a small impact on his debut after recording a shot on target despite being part of the side for less than 48 hours.

After the official announcement of his transfer, Barnes had told Newcastle’s website: ‘I’m delighted. It’s a great club and for me it’s a huge opportunity to come and be involved with a successful team doing exciting things, so I’m excited to be here.’

“I think it’s a striker’s dream to get into a team like that; it’s a fast pace, it’s physically demanding, but you can see the reward of that in the chances and the goals scored, so I think I’ll definitely fit the style.’

Aston Villa also had some of their new signings on the field as both Pau Torres and Youri Tielemans appeared from the bench during the second half.

After the game, Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery was also reported to state that he hopes new signing Moussa Diaby could take part in the team’s next game.

Newcastle’s Eddie Howe also earned some extra attention when he opted not to enter the dressing room at half-time and instead stayed on the pitch talking to players as they prepared for the second half.
