Major update on newborn baby found abandoned in garage in Melbourne

A young mother accused of leaving her unconscious newborn baby in the driveway of a home has been charged by child abuse detectives.

The boy was found in a critical condition in the driveway of a home in Dandenong North in Melbourne’s south-east at 2.40am on Friday.

His 25-year-old mother has been charged by detectives from the Dandenong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Unit with endangering life and recklessly causing injury.

She has been released on bail and is due to appear in Dandenong District Court on December 5.

The baby is still in hospital, but his condition is said to have improved.

This comes after the young mother’s shocked housemates revealed on Friday that they didn’t know she was pregnant.

“We didn’t know she was pregnant because we’ve only known her for three weeks and we work back-to-back shifts so we don’t see each other,” one of them said.

‘We woke up and something had gone wrong. We had to call the emergency services and they came to help us.

‘We are glad that the baby is doing well and we continue to pray for her and the baby.

“We are ready to support her as soon as she gets out of the hospital.”

The roommate added that the mother was a “nice woman” who worked in elderly care.

A single-story home that appeared to have been recently sold was cordoned off with police tape on Friday when officers arrived on the scene.
