New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso left Saturday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels after being hit by a pitch in the eighth inning of LA’s 5-3 win.
Reliever Jose Soriano’s first pitch of the inning, a 80 mph curveball, hit Alonso near the back of the neck and the base of the skull as he attempted to duck out of the way.
Alonso lay on the floor for a moment and manager Buck Showalter ran out to check on him. The Mets currently lead the National League and are second in the Majors, with 84 hits.
After getting up, Alonso exchanged words with Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe, clearing the benches as a precaution before Alonso was removed for a pinch runner after making his way to first base.
Alonso ranks third in the Majors with 39 home runs and needs one more home run with 40 or more before his third season. He was hit as a major league leader seventeen times. The 28-year-old slugger also currently has a .222 batting average.
Mets slugger Pete Alonso left the game against the Angels after being hit by a pitch
After Alonso was hit in the neck by the field, both teams’ benches were emptied
After the incident, it was stated that he had a ‘neck injury’. Earlier this season, Alonso missed time with a wrist injury after being hit by a pitch.
Alonso was also not the only player to leave the game injured.
Angels starting pitcher Chase Silseth left the game after being hit by a throwing error in the fourth inning.
Met’s infielders Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil led off the fourth with consecutive singles – the first hits of the game for the Mets. After taking out Alonso on a heavy lit liner to short, Silseth threw a strike in the first pitch to Daniel Vogelbach. McNeil ran along with the piece, but Lindor did not.
O’Hoppe threw back to first base, breaking Lindor for third.
Los Angeles first baseman Trey Cabbage threw back over the window in an attempt to catch Lindor.
Angels starting pitcher Chase Silseth also left the game early after an injury
However, Silseth began to run for third and Cabbage’s throw hit Silseth in the side of the head and landed in the circle on the Angels’ deck, allowing Lindor to score.
Silseth initially took a few strides towards third before grabbing his head with his glove and falling to his knees and finally onto his stomach on the edge of the grass.
He lay on the ground for several minutes and was monitored by Los Angeles manager Phil Nevin and members of the training staff. He left the field on his own with support on each side.
Silseth made his seventh start of the season.
