New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis has announced that he will retire from football at age 28.

In a statement posted on Instagram, “I have been considering getting out of football for some time now. This decision has not been easy.

‘While I am a profound person, I am a man of few words. I’ve searched my heart for what to do and I think leaving the game is the best path for me right now.

“I have more blessings than I could have ever imagined: I have a wonderful family, a beautiful wife, and two healthy children that I enjoy spending more time with.

“I am truly grateful for all the opportunities I have had and will continue to have on my journey. I want to thank my family and friends and the Jets organization for their support in this process.”

Corey Davis spent the past two seasons with the New York Jets, where he totaled six touchdowns

Last year, he caught 32 balls for 536 yards, bringing him to 3,879 in his six-year career

Selected by the Titans with the fifth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Davis totaled 536 receiving yards and two touchdowns for New York last season.

Jets coach Robert Saleh said the “door is always open” should Davis decide to reverse his decision at any point.

“My heart goes out to him and his family,” Saleh told reporters. “We will always support him in every decision he makes, and we are always there when he needs us.

Davis spent four seasons at Tennessee after being called up to Western Michigan.

Davis was drafted fifth overall by the Tennessee Titans in the 2017 NFL Draft

His best season came in 2020, when he scored 984 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games.

With Davis retiring, there are even more opportunities for Jets receivers Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb.

The Jets begin their NFL season on September 11 against the Buffalo Bills.
