New York City puts out earthquake alert 40 MINUTES late and tells residents to ‘stay indoors’ and only call 911 if injured

  • Nearly an hour after a magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut, an emergency alert was sent

An emergency alert has been issued almost an hour after an unexpected earthquake struck the northeast.

At 11:02 a.m., an alert was sent to millions of people shocked by the earthquake, which occurred at 10:23 a.m.

“A magnitude 4.7 earthquake has occurred in the New York area,” the alert read.

“Residents are advised to stay indoors and call 911 if they are injured.”

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake, which the agency revealed was actually a magnitude 4.8, was centered near Lebanon, New Jersey.

The New York Fire Department said there were no initial reports of damage.

According to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, the epicenter of the earthquake was near Readington in Hunterdon County.

A follow-up emergency alert was sent at 11:46 a.m., informing New Yorkers of what to expect.

‘Aftershocks may be felt. New Yorkers can continue their usual activities,” the alert said.

Both emergency alerts contain a link to a USGS article with safety instructions in case an earthquake occurs.

The USGS article instructed those who experience an earthquake indoors to remain in the building they are in.

“Sit under a desk or table and hold on to it, or go into a hallway or against an interior wall,” the message read.

As for what to avoid, USGS said to avoid windows, fireplaces and heavy furniture or appliances. The kitchen usually has a lot of loose items, so it’s best to avoid that room in the house if possible.

“DO NOT run downstairs or rush outside while the building is shaking or while there is a danger of falling and hurting yourself or being hit by falling glass or debris,” the message said.

If you’re outside during an earthquake, it’s best to run to an open area “away from buildings, power lines, chimneys, and anything else that could fall on you.”

If you are driving during an earthquake, it is important to stop the car carefully.

‘Move your car as far away from traffic as possible. DO NOT stop on or under a bridge or overpass or under trees, light poles, power lines or signs.

‘STAY IN your car until the shaking stops. When you start driving again, look for breaks in the sidewalk, fallen rocks and bumps in the road as you approach the bridge.”

If you are caught in a mountainous area, beware of falling objects, trees, landslides and other debris brought out by the earthquake.

Although the metropolis of 8.5 million is not considered a seismic hotspot, its five boroughs are riddled with fault lines that have the potential to collapse dozens of structures.

Considering that such an earthquake occurs in New York approximately every 100 years and that the most recent occurred in 1884, this earthquake has been a long time coming.
