New Town, Hobart: Man dies after being found unconscious following suspected hit and run

A man has died after being found unconscious on the street, presumably after a car accident.

Tasmanian Detective Inspector David Gill said the man, in his 50s, was found unresponsive on Swanston Street in Hobart’s northern suburb of New Town about 2.50am on Friday.

The man had ‘serious injuries to his torso and neck’.

He was rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery but he could not be saved.

Police suspect that the man was hit by an SUV.

“Detectives have today carried out numerous enquiries, including extensive doorbell calls and the collection of CCTV footage, to establish the man’s movements early this morning and how he sustained his injuries,” Detective Inspector Gill said on Friday.

‘Last afternoon police seized the 4WD vehicle believed to be involved and the vehicle will now undergo forensic examination.

‘Two people believed to be in the vehicle as it travelled along Swanston St this morning are assisting police with their inquiries.’

“The police investigation is ongoing and I would urge anyone with information to come forward,” Inspector Gill said.
