New South of Midnight trailer shows battles and confirms release window
South of midnight is without a doubt one of the most unique-looking games shown in this year’s Xbox Games Showcase so far. The latest trailer for the Compulsion Games-developed action-adventure title gave us our first good look at the combat mechanics in action and ultimately confirmed an official release date.
With incredible art direction that seems to evoke elements of stop-motion video, we’re very interested in diving into everything South of midnight has to offer. The trailer showed off some traversal mechanics, with main character Hazel using a magical glider to fly around the world and a grappling hook to reach high places.
We also saw Hazel fight a large creature with a series of melee attacks and dodge heavy incoming blows. The trailer confirmed that the game will be released in 2025 and will be available on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. It will be part of the Xbox Game Pass subscription service, allowing subscribers to play at no additional cost.
The games Steam store page is currently live and states that “as Hazel, you will explore the mythos and encounter creatures from southern folklore in a macabre and fantastic world.” It also gives us some insight into the game’s story, which sees Hazel’s hometown destroyed by a non-specific disaster.
This will prompt here to “become a Weaver: a magical mender of broken bonds and spirits.” With these powers, she will “confront and subdue dangerous creatures, untangle the webs of her own family’s shared past, and—if she’s lucky—find her way to a place that feels like home.”
