New Resident Evil in the works, with the man responsible for reinventing the series at the helm

The next mainline Resident Evil game is in development, game director Koshi Nakanishi confirmed Monday in a video streamed by Capcom.

Nakanishi was the director of Resident Evil 7 Biohazard And Resident Evil: Revealsand also served as designer on Resident Evil 5In other words, Nakanishi’s games returned Resident Evil to its horror roots while reinventing the franchise in important ways.

When confirming the new Resident Evil, Nakanishi said, “It was really hard to figure out what to do after (Resident Evil 7). But I found it, and honestly, it feels substantial.” Nakanishi said he couldn’t say more about the next game, the sequel to Resident Evil Villagebut hopes fans will look forward to the official reveal.

2017’s Resident Evil 7 Biohazard was a major turn for the franchise, moving the action from a third-person to a first-person perspective and introducing a new playable protagonist: Ethan Winters. VillageReleased in 2021, Capcom sees it as the end of the Winters family saga, meaning Resident Evil 9 will likely feature the return of a classic Resident Evil hero or another brand new character.

The most recent addition to Capcom’s survival horror franchise was last year’s remake Resident Evil 4starring Leon S. Kennedy. The Separated paths add-on starring Ada Wong was released for RE4 from September 2023.

Capcom is reportedly multiple Resident Evil projects in developmentincluding remakes of Resident Evil Zero And CodeVeronicaThere is no official release date for Resident Evil 9But given Capcom’s current cadence of releasing a sequel or remake once a year, we could expect the next Resident Evil as early as 2025.
