New Netflix movies 2023: the biggest original films coming to the streamer
>
New Netflix movies came in their numbers last year, and we hope 2023 brings a similar level of original feature film content to the streaming service.
It’s rare for a major platform to lift the lid on its full annual movie list ahead of time, but that’s exactly what Netflix decided to do with its impressive roster of movies headed to the platform in 2022. press release (opens in new tab)the company revealed it would be releasing a new movie every week until Dec. 31 — that was 71 upcoming titles at the time of the announcement.
Since then, original Netflix movies, including The Sea Beast, The Good Nurse, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, have made their way onto our list of the best Netflix movies, and we expect more high-quality features to be released in 2023. Below, we’ve collected details about the biggest new Netflix movies we know of right now, combining their official synopses with confirmed release dates, trailers and promotional images to give you a better idea of what’s to come.

There are few details about what the streamer’s film adaptation of the acclaimed BBC series will cover, though we know the story will serve as a continuation of the Lutheran film saga, with the character “fighting a double threat” . .”
The mother
Release date: May 2023
Cue generic Netflix thriller plot: In The Mother, a deadly female assassin (Jennifer Lopez) comes out of hiding to protect the daughter she gave up years ago while on the run from dangerous men. A bit of a change of pace for Lopez after 2022’s glitzy romcom Marry Me. It was due for release in 2022, but has since been pushed back to May 2023.
Release date: June 2023
As the name suggests, Extraction 2 is a direct sequel to Sam Hargrave’s 2020 Netflix original movie, and will see Chris Hemsworth’s seemingly indestructible hero, Tyler Rake, return for another high-stakes (and invariably globe-trotting) special ops mission. Not much is known about the premise of the movie outside of Netflix’s similar-sounding official synopsis, but the streamer has shared a behind-the-scenes teaser (above).
They cloned Tyrone
Release date: TBA (2023 confirmed)
Not too much is known about They Cloned Tyrone, but the synopsis reads as follows: “A series of eerie events pushes an unlikely trio (Jamie Foxx, John Boyega and Teyonah Parris) on the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy in this meaty, mysterious antics.” Sounds like this new Netflix movie — from first-time director Juel Taylor — has more than a few tricks up its sleeve. The cast looks pretty good too.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget
Release date: TBA (2023 confirmed)
After a perilous escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream: a peaceful island retreat for the entire herd, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl named Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland, the entire chicken species faces a new and terrible threat. This highly anticipated sequel is being directed by Flushed Away director Sam Fell.
Rebel Moon
Release date: TBA (expected 2023)
Army of the Dead director Zack Snyder returns to Netflix this year with Rebel Moon, an epic space opera reportedly inspired by both Star Wars and Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. The film’s official synopsis reads as follows: “A peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. The desperate citizens send Kora, a young woman with a mysterious past, in search of warriors. from the nearby planets to help them challenge the regent.”
Sounds a bit like Dune, to us. Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein and Anthony Hopkins have all been confirmed to star in Rebel Moon, which we expect will see a limited theatrical release given its size.
Master
Release date: TBA (2023 confirmed)
Produced by Todd Phillips, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and starring Bradley Cooper (who also directs the film), Maestro revolves around the life and legacy of West Side Story composer Leonard Bernstein. Judging by the prosthetics used to transform Cooper into the much older Bernstein, we expect Netflix to be a shoo-in for the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hair Styling next year (depending on the release date).
We have a ghost
Release date: TBA (2023 confirmed)
Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon leads this spooky family adventure starring Anthony Mackie and Stranger Things actor David Harbour. After finding a ghost named Ernest haunting their new home, Kevin and his family turn into social media sensations overnight. But when Kevin and Ernest go on a rogue mission to investigate the mystery of its past, the family instead becomes a target for the CIA.
The mothership
Release date: TBA (2023 confirmed)
The Mothership is a sci-fi adventure that follows Sara Morse (Halle Berry) a year after her husband (Omari Hardwick) mysteriously disappears from their rural farm. When she discovers a strange alien object beneath their home, Sara and her children embark on a race to find their husband, father, and most importantly, the truth. Sounds ominous.
Spaceman
Release date: TBA (confirmed for 2023)
When an astronaut sent to the edge of the galaxy to collect mysterious ancient dust finds his earth life falling apart, he turns to the only voice that can help him put it back together. It happens to belong to a creature from the dawn of time lurking in the shadows of his ship. Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano star in this one that intrigues us more than the film’s plot otherwise. No trailer or promotional image has yet been released for Spaceman.
