New mom accused of being selfish after revealing ‘unconventional’ baby name to family
A new mother is left reeling after choosing a very unconventional name for her first child.
Post to the AITAH subreddit, the 29-year-old revealed that she and her husband had chosen the name Nyxiryn for their “beautiful baby daughter.”
‘It is a combination of ‘Nyx’, the Greek goddess of the night, and ‘Irina’, which means ‘peace’ in Greek. We thought it sounded poetic, strong and unique,” she explained.
“We both love mythology and literature, and we wanted a name that felt unique but also meaningful,” she added.
When the woman shared the name with her friends and family, she received a “mixed” reaction that left her baffled.
A new mother has been branded as ‘selfish’ after naming her first child Nyxiryn
‘Some thought it was cool and different, but others were clearly surprised. My mother said it was “a mouthful,” and my sister-in-law was silent for a while before saying, “Well, it’s… interesting,” she said.
Things got worse from there when the woman’s aunt “burst out laughing” during a family dinner.
“Did you seriously name your kid that?” Poor child. You almost cursed her with that name,” the aunt remarked.
The family member then called Nyxiryn a “made up, weird name” and claimed it would lead to the little girl “being bullied at school.”
“She even went so far as to call me selfish for giving her such a name and said I was causing her a life of frustration,” the mother wrote.
“I’m starting to doubt myself,” she admitted.
‘My mother said my aunt was going too far, but also added that “people have a point” and suggested we might want to consider a more “normal” name.’
Readers in the comments section of the post seemed to agree that the name was too bizarre and should be changed for the child’s sake.
‘I have an unconventional name and life has been hard. Fewer opportunities in almost everything and everyone judges you by your name. It’s a fucking curse,” wrote one.
“You need to think about whether you choose a name based on your daughter’s needs or based on your own desire to sound smart,” another added.
