New live-action Avatar photos show off some favorite side characters

In honor of the winter solstice – also known as the day in the Avatar verse when the line between the spirit world and the human world is blurred – Netflix has released some new first-look photos from the upcoming live-action remake of Avatar: The last airbender.

This series of photos highlights some of the series' most beloved supporting characters, most notably freedom fighter Jet (Sebastian Amoruso); bounty hunter June (Arden Cho); and Kyoshi warrior Suki (Maria Zhang). Oh, and Danny Pudi is also the mechanic (remember him?).

There's also a bonus shot of Gordon Cormier's Aang meditating. After all, it is a very spiritual time of year!

Like previous images we've seen, these new photos translate the cartoon quite well, especially when it comes to the small details of the costumes.

Netflix first announced the live-action rendition of the beloved animated series in 2018. Original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were on board to make the series better than the 2010 M. Night Shyamalan film. However, they left the production two years later, explaining that the vision of the Netflix series was not in line with the “spirit and integrity of Avatar.” Since then, they've announced new animated projects in the Avatar verse.

In the meantime, there is a new creative team led by Sleepy Hollow's Albert Kim, took over the Netflix show. Michael Goi (Riverdale), Jabbar Raisani (Lost in space), and Roseanne Liang (Shadow in the cloud) also joined as director. The main cast consists of Gordon Cormier (The score) as Aang; Kiawentiio (Anna with an E) as Katara; Ian Ousley as Sokka; and Dallas Liu (Pen15) as Zuko. The four relative newcomers are joined by heavyweights including Daniel Dae Kim, Amber Midthunder, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Danny Pudi and George Takei.

Avatar: The last airbender will be released on Netflix on February 22, 2024.
