Horror as New Jersey cop runs over woman sunbathing on the beach

A woman sunbathing on the beach in preparation for Labor Day weekend was struck by a police car in a horrific crash.

The woman was relaxing on the beach in Wildwood, New Jersey on Wednesday when she was hit by the car.

Witness Simone Rose said she heard screams all around her on the beach as shocked bystanders tried to alert the officer in the Ford F-150.

“They were the ones who took action,” she said NJ.com.

‘People were screaming, “You hit someone! There’s someone under your truck! Stop!”

She said the officer involved only jumped out of the truck when people were gathered around him.

Bystanders helped each other to lift the front of the truck off the victim, Simone recalls.

The woman suffered broken ribs and vertebrae and reportedly has lung problems. She is expected to survive the crash.

It is known that she was sunbathing on a towel in dark clothing when the incident occurred. She was with a man who was swimming in the water at the time.

Her identity has not been publicly released.

Wildwood Police Chief Joseph Murphy said Friday that the officer involved, whose name was not released, is normally assigned to the beach.

The incident is being investigated internally and a spokesperson said no comment could be made while the investigation is ongoing.
