New iPhone 15 leak reveals battery capacities of all four models
The iPhone 15 devices have now been officially unveiled, but Apple traditionally doesn’t reveal all the individual specs of its phones – leaving us to rely on other sources and teardowns to get the full picture of what these devices have to offer.
We now apparently have the specific battery capacities for all four iPhone 15 models, according to a regulatory filing in China, noted by MySmartPrice (through Android Authority). The good news is that there is a small upgrade over the 2022 phones.
Listed capacities are 3,349 mAh for the iPhone 15, 4,383 mAh for the iPhone 15 Plus, 3,274 mAh for the iPhone 15 Pro, and 4,422 mAh for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple says these phones have up to 20, 26, 23, and 29 hours of battery life, respectively.
These compare to 3,279 mAh for the iPhone 14, 4,325 mAh for the iPhone 14 Plus, 3,200 mAh for the iPhone 14 Pro and 4,323 mAh for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, so we’re not talking about huge progress year after year.
Battery life calculations
It’s worth bearing in mind that the hours of battery life quoted above for the iPhone 15 series – based on video viewing on the phones – are exactly the same as those Apple also quoted for the equivalent iPhone 14 handsets.
That suggests any increase in capacity has been eaten up by additional power demands elsewhere in the chassis, although it’s hard to know for sure. Previous leaks suggested we’d be getting major battery capacity upgrades with the iPhone 15, but that clearly didn’t happen.
Battery life depends on a whole range of factors, not just the battery capacity. The size and brightness of the screen, the speed of the phone’s chipset, and the efficiency of the internal modem can all play a role.
