New images of Nou Camp redevelopment show £1.3billion stadium still looking like a building site… as Barcelona boldly claim the iconic venue will host matches THIS YEAR

New images show extensive construction work at Barcelona’s iconic Nou Camp as the club look to play matches at the venue this year.

After winning the LaLiga title in June 2023, the Catalan giants began construction on their world-famous stadium as part of a £1.3 billion renovation project.

The third tier of the stadium was demolished after the end of last season as the project began to deliver a modernized stadium with a capacity of 105,000.

The latest images have revealed that work is underway on the remaining two levels of the site, where the playing surface has long since given way to the center of the structure.

Barcelona informed the city’s Technical Architecture Association this month about the progress of the redevelopment.

Architects were shown columns for the third floor of the stadium venue beginning to rise, with pillars on the second floor of the stadium.

Barcelona states that the entire structure of the new third layer will be developed around the previous facade, designed by Francesc Mitjans, Jose Soteras and Lorenzo Garcia in 1957.

Repair work has also been carried out to the structure of the first and second floors of the venue, with initial construction work taking place on the new lower tiers in the first floor of the stadium.

Barcelona remain confident that construction is on track, with president Joan Laporta insisting the club can still host matches at Camp Nou this year.

Laporta said Mundo Deportivo that Barcelona want to host a match at Camp Nou before Christmas, with talks reportedly underway between the club and LaLiga.

During the match, the stadium would reportedly be at 60 percent capacity, with the first and second tiers of the stadium open.

The plan would allow around 65,000 supporters to attend the match, with the club also aiming to have 50 per cent of VIP areas open.

Waterproofing of the stands is reportedly underway as Barcelona prepares to install seats ahead of possible matches at the venue late this year.

Barcelona has aimed for the club to operate the stadium at 90 percent capacity during the 2025-2026 season, while construction work continues on the stadium’s third level.

The Catalan giants will play home games at the 54,000-capacity Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys until their new stadium is ready to welcome them back.

The Catalan giants, who have had well-documented financial problems in recent years, are expected to earn an extra £25 million a year once the stadium is completed.

Barcelona’s stadium project will expand Camp Nou’s capacity to 105,000 seats, as well as renovate the interior, add escalators and upgrade the press room.

Last month the club published images of the final design of the stadium, which Barcelona claims will set an ‘architectural benchmark for the city and for the world’.
