A new version of the Nest Learning Thermostat could be arriving soon, according to leaked promotional images. The images indicate that the new smart thermostat will have a similar design to its predecessor, but Google may have switched from a movable dial to a touchscreen.
The images were posted by Arsene Lupin on Twitter and shared by 9to5Google. They appear to be leaked promotional materials advertising a new version of the Google Nest Temperature Sensor, which will be compatible with three Nest thermostats, including the currently unreleased Nest Learning Thermostat (4th generation).
The new Learning Thermostat appears to have a rounded glass front instead of a flat one, and the interface appears to have been refined. While the 2020 Nest Learning Thermostat used a twist and press/click interface, the redesigned device’s larger glass surface area and thinner metal bezel suggest it may feature touch controls.
In terms of actual features, this might not be a huge leap over the 2020 model. An FCC listing posted last month suggests the wireless capabilities will be the same, with Soli low-energy motion sensing, but it’s hard to say more at this point. Integration with Matter would be one of the more obvious upgrades, particularly for this high-end thermostat, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Hopefully the similarity in design means an upgrade from the 2020 model will be simple, with no additional wiring required.
A long awaited update
The original Nest Temperature Sensor has been available since 2018, so the Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd generation) has been on the market for a long time.
It looks very similar to its predecessor (a small, round device that you can mount on the wall or sit on a shelf) and connects to the Google Home app, allowing you to set the temperature you want the room to be at a certain time of day.

We would have liked to see some linked radiator valves, like those from Hive, which would allow temperature control on a room-by-room basis, but there is no indication that this will happen.
The Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) may launch after the Google Pixel event on August 13. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more.
