New images have revealed the condition Man City goalkeeper Ederson was in before he was substituted in Tuesday evening’s Premier League match against Tottenham.
The Brazilian goalkeeper suffered a nasty blow to the head during a second-half clash with Spurs defender Cristian Romero, but he tried to continue playing and was distraught when he was withdrawn from the crucial match just minutes later.
Pep Guardiola later defended his club’s conduct and insisted Ederson did not suffer a concussion, but leading brain injury club Headway believes Man City should have acted immediately.
New images shared on X (fka Twitter) showed Ederson had ‘virtually passed out’, with players from both sides quickly signaling that medical attention was urgently needed.
When he got back to his feet, he looked dizzy and was remarkably allowed to play for several more minutes before being substituted for Stefan Ortega – leaving Ederson furious at being taken off the field despite the obvious problem.

Concerns for Ederson’s well-being increased as the Brazilian remained on the field for several minutes
It was later claimed that Ederson only suffered eye injuries as a result of the collision, which booked Romero, but concerns were raised over the way head injuries were handled.
Headway CEO Luke Griggs said: ‘The fundamental principle of any concussion protocol is: ‘If in doubt, wait and see’.
‘The concern expressed by players from both teams in the immediate aftermath of the injury, as well as by the medical team and the fact that a stretcher was brought onto the pitch, would indicate a clear concern for Ederson’s welfare.
‘The fact that he was not immediately removed would indicate that there was no concussion. This is difficult to understand, especially since the symptoms only appear later.
‘While we were relieved to see the player leave a few minutes later, it is difficult to understand why this was not an immediate decision.
“It’s another example of when a temporary concussion would have been helpful.”
“Ederson’s angry response is no surprise given the competitive nature of players wanting to participate in large-scale games like this, although his response underlines the need to take such decisions out of the hands of the players.”
Ortega came on for the injured Ederson in the 69th minute of the match and believes he is ready to replace the Brazilian as Man City’s top goalkeeper.

Stefan Ortega came on for Ederson and made a crucial save to deny Son Heung-min a goal
Jamie Carragher claimed Ortega had ‘effectively won Manchester City the Premier League’ after his superb save to deny Tottenham’s Son Heung-min an equalizer in the 85th minute of the match.
After the match, Ederson revealed that he had received some funny messages from Arsenal fans ahead of the Premier League match after his phone number was leaked.
