A new dad went viral online after he tried to use a 30-year-old coupon at Target, but the attempt led to a surprising twist.
While preparing to welcome his first baby into the world, Logan Ivey, 30, discovered an old Gerber coupon that had originally been gifted to his mother when he was a newborn.
The coupon promised $1 off any Gerber item, excluding food, and had “no expiration date” printed on it in bold letters.
Gerber and his fiancée Michelle took the coupon to their local Target, where they were confused by the staff who couldn’t find a way to scan the coupon.
After three different staff members tried to help, a manager eventually accepted the coupon and lowered the price of a pair of Gerber socks from $9 to $8.
The new father found the 30-year-old receipt on a card addressed to his mother
In an unexpected twist, Gerber employees spotted the viral video — which has amassed more than 2.4 million likes — and responded with a sweet gesture for the couple.
“We saw your video and are thrilled that you were able to share a little piece of our history as you get ready to bring your own Gerber baby into the world,” a company spokesperson said. said in their own viral video.
“While it’s incredible that you were able to use our old coupon, we want to offer you something bigger and better,” the longtime employee said.
The company gave Ivey and his fiancée a year’s supply of baby food plus a wardrobe of baby clothes.
“Congratulations to you and your fiancé, we are so happy for you!” the company added.
“Thanks your mom for saving the receipt, it was so nice to see one again.”
“We were really excited about this and thought it was all crazy because it started with a little $1 off coupon.
“So many people said they were angry that I cut up a card with sentimental value and ruined the memory.” Ivey told Newsweek.
“But in the thirty years my mother had that card, she had probably only looked at it once or twice.
Target store employees were baffled by the 30-year-old coupon without a barcode
“But now my mom has shown so many people my video and Gerber’s reaction video.
“She of course showed it to her best friend who gave the card thirty years ago, who loved it, and wasn’t mad that I cut it up.
‘Also a nice touch was that in the package Gerber gave us they recreated the card and coupon, but this time with the baby food and wardrobe, so we now have an intact card to match the card cutout. he explained.
