New CDC report breaks down the risk of suicides for every job industry… with very surprising results

Men who work in mining are at the highest risk of suicide in the US, according to an official analysis of 2021 figures.

For women, suicide rates were highest among artists and those working in the performing arts and construction industries.

Meanwhile, those who worked in education were the ones least likely to die by suicide β€” and this was true for both men and women, the CDC data showed.

A second analysis looked at the change in suicide rates between 2001 and 2021 and found a sharp 33 percent increase in suicides. the US workforce – the age group from 16 to 64 years.

A total of 37,602 working-age people died by suicide in 2021, compared to 24,767 in 2001.

To guide suicide prevention strategies, the CDC analyzed suicides by industry and occupation in 49 states, using data from 2021 death certificates.

It is well documented that mental health problems are particularly prevalent among miners.

a 2021 study found that more than a third of miners and former miners with black lung disease struggle with depression, and more than one in ten have recently considered suicide.

In sectors such as mining, construction, car repair, arts and entertainment and agriculture, the suicide rate was higher than the average for all sectors.

It is believed that artists are at greater risk of suicide due to their higher prevalence of mental illness, especially mood disorders.

Research among artists and writers, collected in Scientific American, has shown that they are up to twenty times more likely to have bipolar disorder and ten times more likely to have depression.

Psychiatrists at Standford University have suggested that this is because artistic people tend to be more sensitive than others, and have an intense desire to find meaning in their work.

Male miners had a suicide rate of 72 per 100,000 people, while the construction rate among men was 56 and among women 10.4.

Compared to the entire workforce, suicide rates among men, women, or both were elevated in nine of the top 20 industrial groups: mining, construction, other services (such as vehicle repair), arts, entertainment and recreation, agriculture, transportation, and warehousing. , administration and HR, hotel and food service and healthcare and social work.

For both genders, the sector with the lowest suicide rate was education.

There is little research showing why this is so. However, some have argued that teachers are more likely to have feminine characteristics, such as empathy and thoughtfulness, and that these personality types are less likely to choose suicide methods that kill them.

Another reason could be that those who work in education find their jobs very rewarding.

A 2016 national survey of teachers by the Center for Education Policy found that the majority of teachers said the job was β€œvery rewarding.”

They felt like they were making a difference in students' lives and enjoyed seeing their students succeed academically.

The wholesale trade also had relatively low suicide rates among both men and women, which may be due to the fact that the work involves a lot of interaction with people.

The number of suicides in America rose to record highs last year, reaching nearly 50,000.

Separately released data from the National Center for Health Statistics shows that a total of 1,266 more people committed suicide in 2022, compared to 2021 – an increase of three percent.

And since 2014, the number of suicides has fallen by 16 percent.

Additionally, the agency said the latest, most recent count will likely be higher as information on deaths is reviewed.

The data, drawn from death certificates, suggests that suicides are now more common in the US than at any time since World War II.

The NCHS data showed that suicides also rose from 2020 to 2021, with an increase of more than 1,000.

Experts have blamed increased pressure due to the rise of social media, isolation due to the pandemic and the cost of living crisis for the increase in these types of deaths.
