New Bluey fan theory emerges about timeline of hit children’s show amid global success

A new theory about the popular Australian children’s animated series Bluey has fans in a frenzy.

According to an eagle-eyed viewer, the animated series about a sweet family of blue heels is set in the early 2000s.

And the same fan also claims that they calculated the characters’ ‘ages’ based on story details.

Since the show first debuted in 2018, fans have been wondering how old Bandit, father to Bluey, seven, and Bingo, five, is.

Both child characters have only had one birthday in six years on the show, leading fans online to ask about the exact year the show is set in.

The viewer shared their thoughts on the Adult Bluey Facebook page and posted crucial ‘clues’ to support their theory after watching the season finale Surprise.

“So I’ve had a running theory for a while and the Surprise episode made me look into it more. I believe Bluey is set in the early 2000s,” the fan said in the post.

‘Reason 1: Bandit talks about growing up as a child in the 80s.

‘He could have been born in the late seventies, early eighties. That would make him early 2000s mid/late twenties. That’s the average age for a father with children their age.

‘Reason 2: The technology. In this final episode, people talk about it jumping to the future, but I believe it jumps to the present day.”

“All their electronics are current. They have quite a few of what appear to be Amazon products; an echo point, an echo show and a doorbell. They also have a robot vacuum cleaner (which doesn’t work very well) and a digital photo frame.’

“Cool theory,” said one user on the thread, while another said, “I love this.”

Another Bluey fan agreed: “Absolutely agree! I’m an 81 year old baby! I had my first baby in 2004 at the age of 23. This year she turns 21. So bandit would be about my age, in a few years!!”

Meanwhile, other dedicated viewers were eager to poke holes in the theory.

Some fans have disputed the theory that the series is set in the early 2000s, as the show, set in Brisbane, features an animated skyline of real buildings built after 2017.

‘Bandit is a doctor, so it takes a while before you complete the training. In that case, maybe they waited to have kids,” one fan argued.

Another viewer took issue with the idea that Bluey’s mother and father, Bandit and Chilli, were in their 20s.

“I think Bandit and Chili are in their 40s, they have a more thoughtful lifestyle than they usually do in their late 20s. And we know Chile had fertility problems, so it would make sense that they had children in their mid-30s instead of 20s,” another suggested.

“The average age of first-time mother birth in Australia is 29.8, which means there are definitely older parents out there,” said another fan who disagreed with the theory.

A sharp-eyed viewer also took issue with the early 2000s setting over a detail familiar to most Bluey fans.

“Brisbane’s animated skyline includes buildings built after 2017,” they posted in the thread.

The animated children’s series has been riding high among the top ten streaming shows in the US for 112 weeks.

The numbers were compiled earlier this month by the Nielsen ratings, which track viewership in the U.S., according to the Comicbook website.

Bluey airs in more than 60 countries and all three seasons of the Emmy-winning cartoon are available on ABC iview.

Last month, BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company announced they were bringing Bluey’s first-ever animated film to the big screen, which will be written and directed by the show’s creator, Joe Brumm.

“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on The Sign in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,” said Brumm.

‘I always thought Bluey deserved a movie in the cinema. I want this to be an experiential event that the whole family can enjoy together.”
