Netflix’s next Bird Box movie has more Barcelona, less Bullock
Fans of post-apocalyptic horror thrillers and alliteration take note: Birdhouse Barcelonaa spin-off of the 2018 film starring Sandra Bullock will premiere on Netflix on July 14. The streamer released the first teaser for the movie on Tuesday, and it looks like a lot of people are afraid of running around with blindfolds on and jumping off tall buildings.
If you’ve never watched Bird BoxYou might be surprised how much that fact alone makes you an outlier. Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release, the film attracted a significant audience and became the most watched film on Netflix within a month of its release.
A Spanish-language spin-off was soon announced before the release of the moviewith Alex and David Pastor (The inhabitant) linked to direct. Birdhouse Barcelona stars Georgina Campbell (Barbarian), Mario Casas (Three steps above heaven), Diego Calva (Babylon), and Alejandra Howard (Do not be afraid).
The original film is set in a world where a mysterious wave of unexplained suicides is spreading across Europe and Asia, causing global panic and the collapse of civilization. After learning that the suicides are caused by ghostly creatures that cause mass hysteria when seen, survivors begin wearing blindfolds outside and using caged birds to warn themselves of the creatures’ premise. Basically, it’s like M. Night Shyamalan’s The event meets Death stranding.
Birdhouse Barcelona is intended to be the first in a series of multiple local-language spin-offs set in the universe of the original. It makes sense, given the success of other similar Netflix acquisitions like Money robberythat Netflix would repeat the same approach of creating localized iterations of popular titles to capitalize on Bird Boxthe initial success.
