Netflix’s new King Kong series covers Skull Island in monsters

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empirethe sequel to Adam Wingard’s 2021 film Godzilla against Kongwill hit theaters in March 2024. You don’t have to wait that long for the next installment in the so-called “Monsterverse”, though: On Monday, Netflix released the first teaser for Skull Islandan animated series set in King Kong’s house of the same name.

Produced by Powerhouse Animation Studios, the studio behind it Castlevania And Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Skull Island follows the adventures of a group of explorers who rescue a mysterious woman named Annie from the ocean, then set out on an adventure to explore the fabled island, home to legendary prehistoric beasts such as [breathlessly searches Wikipedia] Psychovulture, Sirenjaw, Swamp Locust, Skullcrawlers and of course: Kong.

The trailer looks good: it offers a glimpse of several of the aforementioned critters as they rip, tear, jump, and lunge after the series’ hapless heroes, and there’s a cool shot of a woman (presumably Annie) getting on a vine swings and becomes the trap on an armored goon. It’s no Godzilla: The Seriesbut I certainly won’t look a giant monkey in the face and say no to a new animated take on a beloved franchise.

Skull Island premieres on Netflix on June 22. It features voice performances by Nicolas Cantu (The Walking Dead: World Beyond), Mae Whitman (The DUFF), Darren Barnet (Never have I ever), Benjamin Bratt (Poker face), Betty Gilpin (Mrs. Davis), and more.
