The Netflix movie Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery garnered an expected $15 million opening in its first week after opening $13.3 million in its first five days.

The box office totals were the streaming service’s most lucrative theatrical release for a movie before it arrived on Netflix.

The film’s $9.3 million three-day opening marks the tenth-best opening for a motion picture in fewer than 900 theaters, finishing ahead of titles such as 1991’s The Doors, which made $9.1 million in 840 theaters; and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, which opened in 530 theaters for $8.68 million in 2004, deadline reported.

Sources told Deadline that Netflix reached a business deal with theaters, charging about 40 percent rent instead of 60-70 percent, and spending four times as much on exhibitor marketing.

Cinemark previously showed movies from Netflix from the aftermath of the 2020 pandemic.
