Netflix’s 3 Body Problem Trailer Teases A Sci-Fi Epic, VR Horror, And Mysterious Thriller All In One

The official trailer for 3 Body problemNetflix’s new multi-genre show, has made its debut online – and it looks like it’s going to be an epic, mind-blowing affair when it’s released in March.

The trailer, released on day two of CES 2024, offers our best look yet at the upcoming Netflix series based on Liu Cixin’s best-selling book The three-body problem – the first novel in Cixin’s beloved trilogy Remembrance of Earth’s past.

To be honest, the two-minute teaser also doesn’t do justice to the scope of the story that Cixin’s literary works tell. Rather than wax lyrical about what’s in the latest footage, I’ll let you watch the trailer first and provide more details below.

Here’s the first full one 3 Body problem trailer:

This is not the first 3 Body problem images we have seen. We reported this in June 2023 Game of Thrones‘ showrunners traded bloody fantasy for mind-boggling science fiction with their first Netflix venture, which received its first teaser at Tudum 2023. A first clip was also shown in November, and we’re sure it will give you virtual reality (VR) nightmares .

But enough to blow our own trumpet: what is 3 Body Problem actually about? It’s complicated. You see, Cixin’s novels tell a compact, if rich, story that spans all of time, space, and human history, so it’s difficult to summarize its plot in a more manageable synopsis without spoiling anything.

Luckily for you, the experts at the best streaming service in the world have provided a handy overview of what to expect 3 Body problem‘s genre-bending story. A quick glance at the story’s synopsis and/or footage confirms that it will combine sci-fi spectacle, VR horror, detective drama, historical epic, and wuxia-based action in one package.

“A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China resonates across space and time to this day,” reads the show’s logline. “When the laws of nature inexplicably crumble before their eyes, a tight-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in human history. 3 Body problem is an epic story that redefines science fiction drama with its layered mysteries and genre-bending high stakes.”

A kind of Game of Thrones reunion

As mentioned, Game of Thrones TV program creators DB Weiss and David Benioff have brought along 3 Body problem to life on the small screen – their first major production since their HBO fantasy series closed critically in 2019.

The pair are joined by Alexander Woo (Real blood, The terror: shame) as co-creators, writers, and executive producers of one of the 10 most exciting shows I picked for early 2024. However, as with most TV or film adaptations, creative license has been taken on Cixin’s material, meaning that some long-time fans may not be thrilled with the potential deviations from the source material.

Speak with Tudum.comHowever, Woo is hopeful that diehard fans of Cixin’s work, as well as newcomers to the series, will find something to like about Netflix’s adaptation. “What we hope to do is bring the experience – if not necessarily the exact details – of the novel to the screen,” Woo said. “What, we hope, has remained is the sense of wonder and the sense of scope, of scale, where the problems are no longer just the problems of an individual or even a nation, but of an entire species.”

3 Body problem is something of a Game of Thrones reunion, with Weiss and Benioff being hired Thrones John Bradley alumni Liam Cunningham and Jonathan Pryce will play key roles in the first season. That trio also includes other notable names, including Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Jovan Adepo (Babylon), Rosalind Chao (Star Trek), Eiza González (Godzilla vs. Kong), Jess Hong (Grafted), Marlo Kelly (Challenge me), Alex Sarp (A life), Ben Schnetzer (Y: The last man), and Saamer Usmani (Invent Anna).

Shall 3 Body problem make its way onto our top Netflix shows once it’s released? We’ll know for sure once it launches on the streaming giant – but based on what I’ve seen so far, I’m firmly in the ‘yes’ camp.

3 Body problemwhich consists of eight episodes, will be released exclusively on Netflix on March 21.
