Netflix viewers shocked by ‘terrible’ 2017 Rotten Tomatoes flop rises to number one on most-watched list

Netflix viewers were shocked after a 2017 Rotten Tomatoes flop rose to number one on the streaming service’s most-watched list this week.

The Snowman, starring Michael Fassbender, was directed by Tomas Alfredson and adapted from the novel by Jo Nesbo.

In the film, Detective Harry Hole (Fassbender) investigated the disappearance of a woman in early winter and realized the case may be related to a snowman.

The film cost $34 million (£27 million) to make but only made $6.7 million (£5.4 million) in the US and was rated at 6 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite being panned at the time, the movie has risen through the ranks on the streaming service’s website six years later.

However, some people have been baffled by the film’s newfound popularity and have taken to Twitter to slam the film.

One person wrote, “I tried to watch this because I heard it was hilariously bad, but mostly it was just really boring. Disappointing.’

Another said, “Don’t watch The Snowman on Netflix. Really stupid.’

A third wrote: ‘The Snowman (2017) is currently the number 1 movie on Netflix, which is really shocking.

“I’ll never forget seeing it in the theater and legitimately thinking I’d like to pass out or something because it didn’t make any sense at the end.”

“I looked it up and about 15% of the script was never made into a movie!!!!”

But some people praised the movie, despite it being labeled “the worst movie of 2017.”

One person wrote, “The Snowman is the #1 movie on Netflix. I don’t think this movie gets enough credit.’

Another said, “The Snowman on Netflix is a great watch,” and a third added, “I’m hyped they have the Snowman on Netflix, I love this movie.”

Speaking to Event magazine in 2019, author Nesbo said of the film, “I was on a climbing trip in Greece, so I wasn’t here for the premiere.

“I read the reviews so I decided I didn’t need to see it. I still don’t. The movie is not the book.’

‘Is there any consolation in that? “Yes, but it could have been a version very faithful to the book.

“There are a lot of great movies that are true to the novels.”

The film was panned by critic Brian Viner in 2017, who, writing for the Daily Mail, said, ‘Alfredson tries his best – sometimes too hard – to make his film distinctive.

“It’s both extremely gruesome and, in using the Norwegian landscape, quite beautiful. And it has an undeniably stylish cast.

In addition to Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, JK Simmons, Val Kilmer, Chloe Sevigny, an underutilized Toby Jones, and an even underutilized Anne Reid all do their best to straighten out the complicated story.

“Mind you, just when you think you know what’s going on and who did what to whom, Alfredson dangles another red herring.”
