Netflix viewers are ‘hooked’ on new psychological thriller miniseries
Netflix viewers are hooked on the streaming service’s latest thriller Dear Child, which was released last week.
The six-part series is based on the bestseller of the same name by Romy Hausmann, the German novel Liebes Kind.
On Tuesday, the drama as a ‘mysterious woman escapes from her harrowing captivity’ landed at number 3 in the UK Netflix charts.
Dear Child begins when an unknown woman is hit by a car in a forest at night, while a “precocious and strange” girl accompanies her in the ambulance.
The young child’s disturbing comments about their past encourage nurses to alert the police – which in turn leads to a 13-year-old missing persons case finally being reopened.

Amazing: the six-part series is based on the best-selling German novel of the same name by Romy Hausmann – Liebes Kind
A synopsis from Netflix reads: ‘When Jasmin Grass (Kim Riedle) is kidnapped in a parking garage in the German thriller series Dear Child, she is locked in a small windowless apartment in the middle of a northern German forest.
‘Her kidnapper – whose face we never see – dyes her dark hair blond and calls her ‘Lena’.
From that moment on, she is forced to live by his strict rules and care for ‘their’ young children, Hannah (Naila Schuberth) and Jonathan (Sammy Schrein).
‘After five months, Lena manages to escape her prison in a desperate and harrowing escape – but soon realizes she cannot hide from her perpetrator.’
The series, which debuted on September 7, is teased to be “as intense as Gone Girl” and will leave viewers “unable to stop watching.”

Director and lead writer Isabel Kleefeld said in an interview with Netflix’s Die Woche that the people behind the scenes thought the story was “special” because it told the story from the victim’s perspective, “never from the perpetrator’s perspective.”
Co-writer and co-director Julian Pörksen added: ‘These are all damaged characters: people who have been seriously scarred by a crime and deal with it very differently.
‘The perpetrator is often central in such series and is glorified as a mysterious, dark force. That is not the case with us.
‘And there is a main character who is extraordinary in every way. A girl with a special view of the world, a special way of speaking, thinking and experiencing.’
