Netflix just canceled a new fantasy series from the producers of Dark before it even aired, and I’m seriously not happy
Netflix’s canceled shows list just got bigger as the best streaming service has canceled the long-awaited fantasy series The Grimm reality of the producers Dark, despite filming being completed – and it’s a disappointment to say the least.
According to Deadlinefilming for The Grimm Reality began in late 2022, so it’s surprising to see the project shut down after so much anticipation. The producers (Wiedemann & Berg and Dog Haus Films) of the popular time-travel thriller Dark were also behind the series, which makes me wonder why it was canceled in the first place given the massive success of their previous show, which has a stellar 95% Rotten Tomatoes score and deserves a worthy place on our list best Netflix shows list.
Dark, created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, it was Netflix’s first German-language original series to become an international success. The streamer revealed at the time: “After the release of the first season, we noticed that nine out of ten viewers were from abroad. This also applies to season two: 93% of the viewers of seasons one and two are not from Germany.”
This will certainly be disappointing for fantasy fans to hear and the fate of the show would not have gone down well with the German producers, especially as the show was highly anticipated and had attracted great interest before it was cancelled. After stretching The Grimm reality, Netflix could be missing out on a unique fantasy series that could have attracted a large number of viewers Dark there was plenty to do.
What was The Grimm Reality about?
What’s on Netflix originally announced the news of the show, describing it as a “fairytale urban fantasy thriller”. Plot details of the series were never revealed, but it was suggested that it would be based on the German folklore tales of the Brothers Grimm from the 18th and 19th centuries, which were much darker than the Disney versions.
The publication also implied that the modern retelling of the classic folk tales would be set in present-day Berlin, with a stellar cast starring in the production, including Hyun Wanner, Patrick Isermeyer, Eidin Jalali and Dennise Scheuermann.
The Grimm reality isn’t the only recent show to meet a devastating fate, as does Netflix canceled the hit animation My father the bounty hunter, despite a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Earlier this year it also scrapped the beloved coming-of-age comedy series Everything nowwhich begs the question: which show will be next on the chopping block?
