Iconic hit US show set for Netflix release this month sending fans into meltdown

Social media users are getting ready to add “XOXO” to their text messages as CW’s Gossip Girl returns to Netflix.

Twitter has been in a frenzy since Netflix announced that the cult classic will return to the streaming platform on October 29.

‘Gossip Girl is the best show you’ve ever seen. So addictive,” an X user tweeted.

Netflix originally removed the series from its streaming platform in 2021, but it became available to streamers to watch on Max later that year.

The popular American series ended its six-season run in 2012, and critics have praised the show for its stars’ performances and fashion influence.

The television series revolves around the lives of wealthy teenagers living in New York City who are terrorized by a blogger known as Gossip Girl (Kristen Bell).

Best friends Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf are two of those privileged and imperfect teenagers who will do anything to succeed.

While they fight to get into the college of their dreams, Serena also stays busy in her on-and-off relationship with Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley).

Blair also finds himself in a complicated relationship with Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), and later with Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), a troubled young man and womanizer.

The five of them seemingly had a love-hate relationship throughout the show, but after Dan revealed he was Gossip Girl, all the character arcs ended on a high note.

Other notable show stars included Taylor Momsen, Jessica Szhor, Kelly Rutherford and Matthew Settle.

Several X users were excited about the show’s return to Netflix, with more than one person praising specific seasons of the show.

‘Having Gossip Girl back on Netflix now that it’s almost autumn is perfect’ tweeted an X user.

Another X user tweeted: ‘The first two seasons of Gossip Girl were great.’

Others shared memories they made of the show and watching it for the first time.

‘The first time I discovered Gossip Girl was on Netflix. I was using my ‘unlimited’ data while watching it until Straight Talk took my data and later got a class action settlement because of it – xoxo!’, an X user jokes tweeted.

Not many X users showed anger over the show’s return to Netflix, but a few of them weren’t afraid to diss Gossip Girl stars.

‘Please god, please I hate Blake Vivid, I can’t stand her in Gossip Girl, her acting is terrible,’ one X user tweeted.

Other characters that social media users couldn’t stand included Vanessa (Szohr) and Alison Humphrey (Susan Miner).

Gossip girl and man revisited. I hate Alison Humphrey… You left your whole family and you want to come back like you never left,” an X user tweeted.

A few X users also pointed out that Gossip Girl is still on Max and that streamers who don’t have Netflix accounts can still watch all six seasons.

Gossip Girl has an 84 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on critic reviews of each season.

Critics who praised the show’s first season enjoyed the environment and culture that all the characters brought to the show.

“There’s no denying how great that first season was. And the pilot – that pilot is just about perfect,” one critic wrote Vulture.

A reviewer from the Los Angeles Times wrote: ‘Oh, the leggy glamor of it, the pretty rich girls at cocktail parties, the rumpled sexiness of those school uniforms, the gothic romance of stone New York, which hasn’t gotten so much love since Sex and the City. ‘

Season 2 was even more incredible in the eyes of critics, as it is one of two Gossip Girl seasons with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 100 percent.

“The pleasures of Gossip Girl don’t have to be guilty. This melodrama is not high TV art, or even mediocre; but it is mischievous, farcical and funny,” wrote a reviewer for the Boston sphere.

Unfortunately, the show’s final season didn’t receive as much praise, and more than one critic felt it needed some improvement.

‘With age comes wisdom? Whoever said that should have passed the memo to the Gossip Girl gang, because after six seasons,” one critic wrote in a 2012 review for Entertainment weekly.
