Netflix has revealed the biggest shows of the second half of 2023, and there are two surprise entries in the top 10

Netflix has announced this A piece season 1 was the most popular series among the fanbase between June and December 2023.

In the second edition of his ‘What we saw: A Netflix engagement reportseries, the streaming giant confirmed A pieceNetflix’s first season was the most-watched show on its platform in the second half of 2023. Considering it spent three weeks at the top of Netflix’s Top 10 TV charts – a feat that made it the mid-to-late king of the TV sea made August 2023 – and five weeks in the top 10 overall, which will come as no surprise to some readers. Considering the impressive display, you won’t be shocked to know that A piece season 2 is in development.

But I digress. What’s most impressive A piece‘s performance is fair How it turned out to be popular.

A total of 71.6 million people watched some of Netflix’s live-action adaptations, whether it was a single episode or the entire season. Few other series have come close to being one of the top Netflix shows with 541.9 million hours streamed. In fact, only one other Netflix TV Original has managed this: King the Country: Limited Series, a Korean rom-com, has surprisingly amassed a whopping 630.2 million viewing hours. Thanks to the incredibly long episodic runtimes (compared to A pieceAnyway), King: The country was only seen by 33.2 million people – a reach that was only good enough to land it at 14th position on Netflix’s latest semi-annual TV chart.

Shocking successes dominate the Netflix TV charts

While King: The country couldn’t wrest the crown of ‘most-watched Netflix show’ A piece‘s grasp, it wasn’t the only surprising inclusion in the top 20 most popular series on the world’s best streaming service between last June and December.

ErasedNetflix’s hardcore action comedy from Cobra Kai‘s creators, which were canceled after one season, actually performed better than anyone expected, sneaking into the top 20 with a not-too-shabby harvest of 27 million views. If it wasn’t for the critically acclaimed The Fall of the House of Usher‘s increased hours streamed – 223.4 million hours watched to 184.8 million – Erased would have finished 19th instead.

However, there were even bigger shocks then Erased. Popular shows included The witcher, Sex education, She-wolfAnd The Lincoln Lawyer they all managed to get a spot in the top 10, but none of them came close to the curb A piece. Indeed, She-wolf Part 3 could only collect 49.7 million views and finished fourth The witcher season 3 (47.9 million), Sex education season 4 (46.3 million), and The Lincoln Lawyer season 2 (35.7 million) finished 5th, 6th and 10th respectively.

Despite mixed reviews, Who is Erin Carter? was a big hit among Netflix’s global user base (Image credit: Netflix)

Okay, so if none of these apparently popular and/or hit shows came in second A piecewhich ones did that?

In a rise for the books, Sweet Childa German crime thriller series, took second place in the period from June to December 2023. Only 252.8 million hours were streamed, but thanks to the short episodic runtimes that translates to a total of 52.5 million views, which is only 20 million less . then Netflix’s live-action remake A piece accumulated.

Even more bizarre is what ended up with the bronze medal. Who is Erin Carter?, another thriller series (albeit a British one), took third place ahead of its competitors with 286.2 million hours streamed and a total of 50.1 million views. Why is Erin Carter‘s position in the final rankings so unexpected? Because, based on its mixed reception, it has 67% critical and 54% audience ratings Rotten tomatoes – it shouldn’t have been as popular as it is. So it just goes to show that using Rotten Tomatoes scores to decide whether or not you should watch a show isn’t always a good idea.

There are even more unexpected TV winners and losers on Netflix from the second half of 2023. The crown Season 6, based on its paltry 25.2 million views, was a certified dud. Netflix’s latest engagement report also shows how popular To take appeared to follow its debut on the streamer last June – the legal drama, which starred Meghan Markle for most of the series, and racked up a whopping 144 million views over its nine seasons. Even older Netflix originals, like Wednesday And The night cop‘s first seasons continued to attract new viewers – the pair racked up 23.9 million and 19 million views respectively.

So what does all this tell us? As much as we think we know which shows will be hits, it’s much harder to determine which TV series will be popular with the masses. Just look at something like that Baby reindeer, which debuted to little fanfare in early 2024 and has become Netflix’s biggest TV success story so far this year. Don’t be surprised if I tell you that in six months Baby reindeer was the most streamed series from January to June 2024.
