Netflix has a surprising new show, Baby Reindeer. Here are three more compelling thrillers to watch
Trust us on this one: Baby reindeer on Netflix may sound like it’s going to be something cute, but it’s really not. Based on Richard Gadd’s hit one-man show, it’s a story about a suffocating, life-destroying obsession that Empire magazine says it is “brave, moving and often disturbing”…although it is rooted in comedy, “the tears you shed will not be tears of joy or laughter.”
The show arrived with very little fanfare, but immediately laid claim to being one of the best Netflix shows – it’s proven to be an instant hit and currently sits at a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score at the time of writing.
If your tastes lean toward darker stories, here are three more dramas on Netflix to keep you hooked once you’ve finished watching Baby reindeer.
Anthracite
We’re going to make this a cautious recommendation because Anthracite is not for everyone: if Decision maker It states that the drama show “features a quirky protagonist who seems to live in a crazier universe than everyone else around her, who seem to live in a standard psychological thriller.” The French show opens with the aftermath of a mass suicide and then flashes forward thirty years to a kidnapping. The kidnapper is the father of web sleuth Ida, who goes looking for him. To suggest Real Detective: Night Counterwith a little more sunshine and a similar level of strangeness.
Ripley
This is another story about tracking someone down, this time a wandering son whose wealthy father hires the hapless con artist Tom Ripley to find him. It is a remake or reinterpretation of Anthony Minghella’s film The talented Mr. Ripleyagain an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel of the same name, and critics agree that it is beautifully set and shot. NPR says it is “a carefully constructed piece of film that references classic noir and Hitchcock, as well as Italian film greats, and it is a great pleasure to watch it shot by shot” and The Mary Sue says that “it is beautiful, twisted and is exactly what I wanted for a new take on Tom Ripley, the most talented con man of them all.”
The tourist
Everyone loves The tourist: Now in its second season, the show is “edgy, brutal and laugh-out-loud funny,” says Collider, and it’s basically a Jason Bourne movie with both humor and action. According to the San Jose Mercury News“while The tourist samples from the same trough as Fargo and sometimes even Pulp FictionIt’s still a pork heaven meal, thanks in large part to (Jamie) Dornan and (Danielle) Macdonald.” It’s all very stupid, says FT.combut it’s nice: ‘think about it too much The tourist and it all starts to fall apart…although Dornan and Macdonald’s comic interludes and charisma easily make up for any lapses in ridiculousness.’
