Netflix Geeked Week 2023 is almost here – these are the 8 movies and shows we’re most excited for

Netflix fans, rejoice! The 2023 edition of Geeked Week, the streaming giant’s seven-day virtual extravaganza, is almost upon us.

That’s right, the world’s top streaming service is just days away from lifting the lid on many of its highly anticipated new movies and shows. Netflix’s Geeked Week showcase, from Monday, November 6 to Sunday, November 12, will reveal details about its upcoming slate of movies and TV shows, including all-important release dates, trailer reveals, behind-the-scenes sneak peeks and so much more.

Ahead of the big event, we’ve picked eight Netflix productions we’d like to know more about. That includes Stranger things‘ fifth and final season, the new film from Zack Snyder Rebel Moonand the upcoming mind-bending science fiction series from the Game of Thronesshowrunners. So without further ado, these are the projects we’re looking forward to hearing more about during Netflix Geeked Week 2023.

Stranger things

Considering it’s one of the best Netflix shows out there, Stranger things will receive its fair share of Geeked Week attention. As with previous Geeked Week showcases, an entire day will be dedicated to the supernatural horror sci-fi series – creatively titled “Stranger Things Day” – kicking off the festivities on Monday, November 6.

What can we expect to be announced? Hopefully there is something new Stranger things season 5. The series’ final outing was marred by delays due to the now-resolved writers’ strike and the ongoing actors’ strike. However, with the showrunners and wider writing team recently resuming work on the Season 5 scripts, we’re hoping for some sort of reveal about the show’s final episode.

Could we get another episode title announcement? Possibly. We had fun coming up with four big theories about it Stranger Things 5 the title of episode 1 in November 2022. While such a reveal wouldn’t completely satiate us, it would go some way to satisfying a fanbase hungry for more details. Maybe we’ll get another update Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a prequel play that debuts on London’s West End in December. Alternatively, an update on the Stranger things live-action and animated spin-off series wouldn’t be out of place.

Based on a post on Stranger things‘ official X account (see above), but we may not get our wish with any of our suggestions. According to a press release from Netflix, Stranger things Day 2023 will “look back at the first four seasons, offer new teases on our social channels, unveil limited-edition merchandise online and in physical stores around the world, and more.” Let’s call one of those new teases something substantial.

Lady

Lady will star Millie Bobby Brown as Princess Elodie. (Image credit: Netflix)

Speaking of Stranger thingsone of its main stars, Millie Bobby Brown (who plays Eleven on the wildly popular show), will star in one of the most anticipated new Netflix films.

Titled Lady, it sounds like it will subvert a lot of fantasy genre tropes. The Brown-fronted film was initially set to debut in October 2022, but its release was postponed due to the actors’ strike. Netflix wanted Brown and her fellow cast members to be available to promote the film.

So it’s possible that the streaming giant will announce a new launch date during Geeked Week. We suspect this will happen in early 2024 (provided the actors’ strike doesn’t last much longer). Failing that, releasing the first teaser would give us an idea Lady‘s chances of making it onto our list of the best Netflix movies. Either way, keep an eye out for the announcement on Saturday, November 11.

3 Body problem

3 Body problem debuts on Netflix in January 2024. (Image credit: Tor)

Netflix has yet to reveal the vast majority of its 2024 film and TV show schedule, but we know this gorgeous-looking sci-fi series will be released early next year.

Based on the novel of the same name by Liu Cixin, 3 Body problem is a surreal, intelligently crafted show developed by Game of Thrones‘TV makers DB Weiss and David Benioff. Little is known about the plot — well, if you haven’t read the book — but the teaser unveiled in June during Netflix Tudum 2023 revealed that Weiss and Benioff traded bloody fantasy for mind-boggling science fiction with their new Netflix show.

Marvel star Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange, She-Hulk: Lawyer), plus Game of Thrones alumni John Bradley, Liam Cunningham and Jonathan Pryce are among the stacked cast. Fingers crossed that an official trailer and plot synopsis will be revealed on Friday, November 10.

Rebel Moon

Zack Snyder’s second Netflix film – his first was from 2022 Army of the dead – is being positioned as the streamer’s big movie for the 2023 holiday season. Titled Rebel Moonthis epic space opera was initially intended as a Star Wars movie. However, Snyder used it again after Lucasfilm rejected his pitch.

With Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Michiel Huisman and Doona Bae, among others, Rebel Moon certainly seems like Netflix’s answer to Star Wars the official trailer in mid-August proves the same. It also confirmed that the galaxy-spanning story would take place over two films. Part One: A Child of Fire debuts on December 22 and Part Two: The Scargiver will be released on April 19, 2024.

So, what is Snyder cooking up for Geeked Week 2023? Netflix has simply said that fans will get an exclusive look at the film on Sunday, November 12. If we had to guess, we think we’ll be treated to a few clips, or perhaps more details about when Rebel Moon‘s director’s cut could happen. We already know Rebel MoonThe extended cut of the film will test our runtime limits, but no release date has been set for an edition that will bring both films into one film.

Avatar: The last airbender

Netflix is turning another iconic anime into a live-action series. (Image credit: Robert Falconer/Netflix)

Fresh off the critically acclaimed live-action version A pieceNetflix hopes to make it two out of three good anime adaptations (sorry, Cowboy Bebop) with its representation of Avatar: The last airbender.

One of the best anime of all time, the Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko-developed series is reimagined by Albert Kim for Netflix. Will be released sometime in 2024, Avatar: The last airbenderThe live-action adaptation of the film is largely based on its predecessor, which tells the story of Aang, the last living ‘Airbender’ who is the only person who can wield all four elements.

Netflix has already revealed first footage of the TV show, so we’re hoping this will give us a firm release date and official teaser during Geeked Week 2023. Tune in to the streamer’s social media channels on Thursday, November 9 for more details.

Scott Pilgrim leaves

Now another anime adaptation, and one based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s mid-2000s cult classic.

Scott Pilgrim leaves offers a new take on O’Malley’s Scott pilgrim against the world graphic novels (he also co-wrote the show with BenDavid Grabinski) when it arrives on November 17. We have already seen the official trailer, which revealed Netflix’s beautiful version Scott Pilgrim‘s video game-style universe, so we’d be surprised if Netflix doesn’t drop a few first-look clips during Geeked Week.

We will provide coverage Scott Pilgrim leaves – one of four exciting and fantastic-looking animated shows coming to Netflix – in and around its release, so check back for our exclusive coverage. Keep an eye on the series before then via Geeked Week on Saturday, November 11.

Leaving the world behind

Leaving the world behind looks like an exciting psychological drama film. (Image credit: JoJo Whilden/Netflix)

This psychological thriller is the brainchild of Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot), so Netflix fans will definitely want to check it out when it hits the platform in December.

The trailer for Netflix’s upcoming apocalyptic movie looks terribly chilling to us Leaving the world behind – based on the fantastic novel by Rumaan Alam – is set to shock and amaze audiences in the near future.

According to Netflix’s story synopsis, it follows Amanda (Julia Roberts) and her husband Clay (Ethan Hawke), who are about to enjoy a luxurious getaway with children Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie). However, their vacation is interrupted by two strangers – GH (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la) – who warn that a mysterious cyber attack is coming. As the disaster unfolds, the two families are forced to reckon with things that are not as they seem.

With new details set to be revealed on Friday, November 10, we suspect we’ll get a few first-look clips and/or a short interview with Esmail.

The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy returns for a fourth and final season. (Image credit: Netflix)

The Umbrella Academy has become a fan favorite series over the course of its first three seasons. However, as the Netflix show heads toward its apocalyptic conclusion with a fourth and final installment, we have to accept that we don’t have much time left to dance the night away with the Hargreeves family.

New details about the series’ latest season are expected to drop on Thursday, November 9, and we’d be surprised if an official release date and/or teaser isn’t announced on that date. Netflix confirmed this at the beginning of October The Umbrella Academy season 4 will be released in 2024, so a launch date announcement would be very welcome. Alternatively, we might get some new cast reveals. Although, based on a February 2023 cast announcement, we’d be concerned that further character reveals would all but confirm yet another apocalypse-like ending for the series.

There will be many more announcements during Netflix Geeked Week 2023, so stay tuned to Ny Breaking between November 6 and 12 for more details as and when they appear.
