Netflix fans go wild as mid-2000s favorite lands on streaming platform

Netflix kicked off the month by adding a popular series from the 2000s that millions of viewers are sure to add to their summer streaming schedules.

The streaming service has added a popular series that aired for 121 episodes on a major U.S. network for six seasons between 2004 and 2010, winning 10 Primetime Emmys over the years.

The fantasy adventure revolves around the aftermath of a plane crash on a deserted island and how the survivors band together afterwards.

The series became a huge success and developed a cult status among television viewers that still exists 14 years after the end of the original series.

Netflix announced Monday that its 22.5 million X/Twitter followers would add a new series to its library with a series of numbers that relate to the show’s storyline.

The series in question is Lost, the hit ABC series from JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Jeffrey Lieber, which is also available on Hulu.

Netflix and Disney reached a pact in 2023 to jointly stream certain series, including Lost and the hit ABC series Grey’s Anatomy, according to Variety.

Netflix struck a deal with Disney/ABC in 2009 for streaming rights to the series. Hulu regained exclusive rights in 2018, the network announced.

The story of the series revolves around the people who survive a plane crash en route from Sydney to Los Angeles.

The series’ cast includes Jorge Garcia, Josh Holloway, Yunjin Kim, Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Daniel Dae Kim, Terry O’Quinn, Naveen Andrews, Michael Emerson, Dominic Monaghan, and Ken Leung.

The numbers in the original tweet – 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42 – had multiple meanings in relation to the show.

They referenced lottery numbers played by Garcia’s character Hugo “Hurley” Reyes; atomic numbers; and numbers in an equation that predicted “a bad omen,” the outlet said.

A number of fans celebrated the news on social media, with one calling the series the “BEST TV SERIES OF ALL TIME,” while another said the news hit them like a “wave of nostalgia.”

“Some of Gen Z is going to see this for the first time and get really frustrated when they realize halfway through that the creators have no idea what they’re doing,” the user said.
