Netflix fans say plans of sequel to 90s classic comedy has ‘made their year’ as star is set to reprise iconic role
Fans of a ’90s comedy classic are excited after Netflix confirmed a sequel to the film is in the works.
Adam Sandler finally returns to play one of his most iconic characters after Netflix announced a sequel to Happy Gilmore.
The 57-year-old comedian and actor will reprise the role of the title character after previously portraying him in the 1996 film.
Happy Gilmore starred the then-Saturday Night Live star as a failed hockey player with anger issues who is convinced to take up golf.
The struggling sportsman then uses his newfound talent to try to win enough money to save his grandmother’s house from bankruptcy.

Now, almost three decades later, Happy Gilmore is returning to the green.
Netflix announced earlier this month at the 2024 Upfront presentation at Pier 59 Studios in New York City that Sandler will reprise the iconic role, but has not yet confirmed a release date, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The original comedy has become one of Sandler’s most popular films, with one of his most recognizable roles.
The news comes after one of the comedy legend’s close friends and regular co-stars – including Drew Barrymore – indicated in April that a sequel to Happy Gilmore was in the works.
And it has been suggested that some of the game’s most famous faces and colorful characters, including Tiger Woods, could be included in the new film.
While fans will have to wait and see how Gilmore’s golf career will be resurrected, they took to X to share their joy over the long-awaited news.
One fan wrote: “This made my year,” while another tweeted: “This is going to be incredible.”
Another Sandler fan said: ‘Adam Sandler is getting a bit of a kick out of it and I agree, not all of his movies are great but I love Happy Gilmore and I’m glad to hear there’s finally a sequel coming to Netflix .’
McDonald and Drew Barrymore both hinted in recent months that Sandler was working on a screenplay for Happy Gilmore 2, but it has only now been confirmed that the film is in the works.

One person, who had canceled their Netflix decision, decided to reverse his decision after hearing the news, writing: ‘I finally canceled my Netflix subscription after wasting it for years…
“Then they decide to make a Happy Gilmore sequel and the most anticipated movie of the past 20 years is about to hit its platform. Here we go again signing up for Netflix!’
Another fan said, “So they’re gonna make a Happy Gilmore 2, huh? This is a sequel I can get behind. This has a lot of potential.’
Meanwhile, a new fan of the original film expressed his excitement after recently seeing it for the first time, writing: “Great movie and apparently I picked a good time to watch it because there’s a sequel coming out.”
It comes as comedy fans rejoice following the release of a new sitcom series on Netflix – starring comedian Shane Gillis as a mechanic who shares his first name and works at an auto shop.
