On social media, viewers of the South Korean horror film The Call called it “disturbing” and “mental madness.”

The psychological thriller – which was initially released on November 27, 2020 – follows two women from different times who come into contact through a telephone conversation.

Set in 2019, 28-year-old Kim Seo-yeon loses her cell phone while traveling to visit her ailing, estranged mother in a rural area.

Arriving at her dilapidated childhood home, she finds a decades-old cordless phone, and through that phone she receives calls from a distressed woman who says she is being tortured.

After investigating, Seo-yeon finds out that the woman on the phone, Oh Young-sook, lives in the same house, but in 1999, twenty years earlier.

Around the world, The Call has five award wins and twelve nominations in total, including a Best Actress award for Jeon Jong-seo at the 2022 Director’s Cut Awards.
