Netflix divides fans as it ‘becomes a hit spin-off series after just one season’

Netflix left fans divided this week when it was revealed that the comedy-drama Freeridge will reportedly not be returning for a second season.

The show, which is a spin-off of the popular series On My Block, only made its debut on the streaming platform in February.

Despite its predecessor’s massive success, the Latina-led Freeridge doesn’t seem to have had the same appeal, according to Rolling Stone.

Following siblings Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia) and Ines (Bryana Salaz) and their friends Demi (Ciara Riley Wilson) and Cameron (Tenzing Norgay Trainor), the show sees the quartet unleash a curse that brings bad luck to their lives.

When the news broke, many viewers took to social media to share their thoughts, some were saddened by the news, while others agreed that it didn’t match the original.

Not anymore: Netflix has divided fans as On My Block Spin-off Freeridge is reportedly axed after just one season

Featuring a full POC cast, the show only had eight episodes and has been available on the streaming platform for less than two months.

MailOnline has contacted Netflix for comment.

Many stars from On My Block were featured, including Peggy Blow, who plays Mariluna, and Paula Garcés, Eric Gutierrez, Eme Ikwuakor and Raushanah Simmons.

Some viewers were devastated that the show had been cut as one wrote “The original is better but I actually liked Freeridge, at first I was like no but then I noticed the nods they gave to original characters” .

“Dang, I enjoyed #freeridge,” just added another.

A third said, ‘I’m so upset! I loved On My Block and was so excited to start Freeridge :(‘

“If they canceled Freeridge, give us an On My Block reunion where they all come back and celebrate Dia De Los Muertos and honor Olivia, Mariluna, Marisol and Spooky,” another suggested.

But not everyone was saddened or shocked when the series ended, with one admitting, “I’m sad, but I can’t say I didn’t see this happen.”

Angry: Some viewers were devastated that the show’s run had been cut short

“They shouldn’t have made one in the first place,” joked another.

The cancellation comes after a massive shake-up from Netflix, with a slew of beloved movies and TV shows set to leave the streaming service.

Blade Runner 2049, Big Daddy, The Social Network, and iZombie are all among the fallen movies set to leave the service on May 1, 2023.
