If you’re a Netflix customer, you’re all too familiar with the streamer’s library and how it’s set up. Currently, there’s a row at the top of the screen titled ‘We think you’ll love this’, with a range of recommendations based on your viewing habits. Mine, for example, consists mainly of horrors and thrillers, so there’s a very obvious theme. But Netflix hopes to improve the personal experience even further by delivering trailers for movies or TV shows that better suit your tastes.
We all know that the watch library can be overwhelming, and even if you consult our lists of the best Netflix shows and best Netflix movies, it can still be difficult to choose what to watch. Netflix hopes to improve the experience by immersing viewers in trailers tailored to them, rather than offering the same to everyone. Instead of focusing on one big show, for example Squid game Season 2 viewers instead watched trailers based on their own viewing history.
How it would work
To explain this further, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has published a publication a 24-page document detailing Netflix’s plan. This system selects different clips and arranges them in a custom order based on what it thinks you would like, based on your viewing history and titles you ‘liked’. A ‘playgraph’ is then created that determines the order in which these clips are played.
To ensure this chart remains relevant, it will change over time based on what you like. So if you’ve been watching a lot of comedy movies lately, you may notice that you’re seeing more comedy titles. It would learn from you and improve your experience in theory.
This is all part of Netflix’s plans to help you navigate its ever-expanding library. This news comes after Netflix tested big changes that will make finding new movies and shows this summer so much easier.
