Netflix and Apple TV Plus will go head-to-head in January 2024, as the streaming giants battle for crime show superiority.
Two of the world’s top streaming services will release new crime thrillers within weeks of each other after New Year’s Day, with Netflix Griselda and Apple TV Plus’ Criminal record with the aim of dominating this particular genre.
It is the latter that will also have an edge over the competition Criminal record will join Apple’s streaming platform on Friday, January 12. The British crime show shines Doctor who alumnus Peter Capaldi as Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty, who is confronted by newly anointed Detective Sergeant June Lenker (The good woman‘s Cush Jumbo) about a decades-old murder case when new evidence comes to light. As the veteran detective battles his young counterpart, the battle lines are drawn as the pair attempt to maintain their legacy and advance their careers.
However, Netflix will not go down without a fight. Less than two weeks after Criminal Record attempts to shut down the crime show angle *ahem*, the streaming giant will release Griseldathe crime thriller starring Sofia Vergara from the team behind the critically acclaimed show Narcos.
Griselda arrives on the platform on Thursday, January 25 and tells the story of real-life drug lord Griselda Blanco who, according to Netflix, “created one of the most profitable cartels in history. In Miami of the 1970s and 1980s, Blanco’s deadly mix of unsuspected Cruelty and charm helped her skillfully navigate between business and family, making her widely known as “the Godmother.”
At this point it is difficult to say which project will emerge as the winner. I would be surprised if Griselda doesn’t play early for inclusion in our best Netflix shows guide. After all, it comes from the team behind it Narcosone of the streamer’s best crime-based series – and that’s saying something when you consider that Netflix is also home to utterly brilliant crime shows like Break bad, You better call Saul, OzarkAnd Kaleidoscope.
However, Apple will have just as much confidence in that Criminal record may convince the jury that it deserves top billing between the pair. I suspect it will make its way onto our list of the best Apple TV Plus shows, joining some great crime-based series including Black Bird And Slow horses.
Regardless of who ends up winning this fight, I’ll be tuning in to see Griselda And Criminal record battle it out for crime-based supremacy. Currently, Netflix is the undisputed king of the streaming world – its nearly 250 million subscriber base proves that, and that’s even before you take into account its extensive TV library and movie collection (read our best Netflix movie hub while you’re here), even though the recent price hikes and crackdown on password sharing have irked some customers.
Despite Apple TV Plus also getting a big price hike this year, I wouldn’t underestimate the streamer’s chances of giving Netflix’s. Griselda a run for his money. Apple’s streamer may have as much money as its rival (thanks to its parent company), but its film and TV offerings are impressive and award-winning nonetheless. There’s a good reason why Apple TV Plus is seen by many as the best streamer for original TV shows, so Netflix isn’t guaranteed a certain fire victory if Griselda And Criminal record take on the first big streaming battle of 2024. As a fan of both services, I can’t wait to see who comes out on top.
