Is this the most brutal collision ever seen in netball? Star player in Tracey Neville’s team ‘absolutely cleaned up’ in horror clash

One of the most brutal clashes ever seen on a netball court took place on Saturday, with the great Bianca Chatfield slamming the ‘disgraceful’ decision to continue the match.

Kim Jenner, defender for Tracey Neville’s Melbourne Mavericks team, was ‘completely beaten’ by Giants opponent Amy Sligar after she took a brilliant deflection.

Both players kept their eyes on the ball and collided heads with less than a minute left in the game at Ken Rosewall Arena, leaving them sprawled on the sideline.

However, the match was not stopped, much to the anger of former Diamonds defender Chatfield.

“Kim Jenner is absolutely on the mend,” Chatfield said on the ABC program Offsiders.

‘At this point in the game the referees didn’t stop, they didn’t call time. Play continued on the other side of the field.

‘I thought that was scandalous.

‘This has to stop.

A huge collision occurred during the Melbourne Mavericks game on Saturday

‘We have a new concussion policy in netball.

‘Any foul with the head up, the game should be stopped immediately. That was not the case. It was let go and played out.

“These poor girls had to pick themselves up and figure out where they were at the end of the day.”

Under Super Netball rules, umpires are allowed to stop time without a request if there is an obvious or serious injury. However, neither official gave the order to stop play.

Another concussion protocol allows an independent match doctor and a home team doctor to request time and remove a player from the field if a head injury is suspected.

Tracey Neville’s team won the race, but questions remained about the concussion protocol

“It seemed a little strange that it just kept going, there were two players on the ground on the sideline and it just kept going,” Giants coach Julia Fitzgerald said.

The Mavericks won the game and Jenner was named player of the game.

“It’s always your body at stake in those minutes. That was our final,” she said.

“It was just: do what you have to do.”
