Neighbors reboot’s plot twist sends fans into a frenzy as viewers reel from first episode’s ‘cruel’ cliffhanger: “I didn’t expect that!”

Neighbors fans were in for a shock this week when the reboot’s premiere ended with an “unexpected” cliffhanger.

Viewers have flocked to social media to express their disbelief at a twist in which Toadie (Ryan Moloney) and Terese (Rebekah Elmaloglou) get married.

But many were baffled by the development given that last year’s season finale saw the popular character marry a completely different woman.

The Channel 10 soap underwent a two-year time jump following last year’s mock series finale in which Toadie married Melanie (Lucinda Cowden).

‘Oh my God! I did not expect that. We are literally here saying WHAT!? one person commented on Instagram.

Another said: “I’m in shock. I do not know what to think ! My whole day was turned upside down!

Others were more worried about Paul (Stefan Dennis) who appeared to have reunited with his love Terese in last year’s series finale following their tumultuous split.

However, the new development meant that they too had gone their separate ways in the meantime.

One person wrote: “Terese and Toadie are great NO NO. Team Paul as it was meant to be. I hope this is a twist. Glad (sic) the neighbors are back.

Someone else commented: “Paul sitting through the wedding watching the love of his life marry another man was just cruel.”

This comes after executive producer Jason Herbison explained to TV tonight Monday, why the show made the decision to change the plot so drastically.

“By taking this two-year time jump, I wanted to reward the audience with a really surprising twist,” he said.

“It’s very possible that two unexpected characters would fall in love during this time and it would make perfect sense if you saw it unfold.”

Herbison continued: “The difference is you didn’t see it unfold – so now we’re asking you to keep watching and find out how it happened.

“I wanted an OMG moment to kick off the new chapter and Toadie and Terese were perfect. I love that they never looked twice at each other that way.

“But it’s not just there for shock value: there’s a deep and complex story behind it.”

This comes after it was revealed that Neighbors already has around 100 episodes in the bag.

On Friday’s episode of The Project, returning stars Annie Jones and Ryan Maloney said the series, which has been filming since April, is more than ready for the new season.

“We started filming in April, so it took us a long time to keep everything really top secret,” Ryan said.

“I think we’re almost at 100 episodes,” Annie said, while Ryan confirmed, “Yes, we’ve done 100.”

He added: “That’s what we’ve done before, so yeah. I mean, we’ve done 9,000 as well, but we’re now at 100 for Amazon, yeah.
