Nearly thirty injured as tour boat smashes into another vessel in Miami dock – as coast guard launches probe

A boating incident near the Port of Miami has left 29 people injured and more than a dozen hospitalized.

The crash occurred when two boats collided in the busy bay around 3:15 p.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officers said — as images from the scene showed some of the effects of the impact at sea.

Officials then said they were deployed to the scene several kilometers from the seaport to pull survivors from the two boats to safety. It was confirmed that one of the ships is the Thriller Speedboat, which transports tourists around the bay at a speed of 65 km/h.

The tour offers ‘the ultimate sightseeing experience’ according to the website and, as the name suggests, is known for its daring speed.

As of 9 p.m. Sunday, no casualties had been reported, but an investigation has been launched by the U.S. Coast Guard as the crash remains largely unexplained. Meanwhile, clips show how several people had to be stretchered and airlifted to safety.

The patients were then taken back to shore several kilometers away from where the crash occurred, said Horacio Rodriguez, division chief of MDFR.

He confirmed in a statement that the crash involved a Biscayne tour boat and another vessel, but did not provide details.

“There were other people in the boat – it was a tour boat, from Bayside,” he said as firefighters descended on the part of the harbor known as Fisherman’s Cut to respond to the crisis.

“Those patients who were asymptomatic were returned to Bayside,” the chief continued, revealing that paramedics had transported a total of 13 patients to an area hospital.

The extent of their injuries remained unclear as of Sunday evening

7News camera crews, meanwhile, confirmed the Biscayne boat was the Thriller viewer and captured multiple units from Rodriguez’s department responding to the crash.

Clips captured by the news channel showed at least one of the victims being flown off the boat by helicopter, and several of those affected appeared to have noticeable injuries.

Officials later said they were deployed to the scene to transport survivors from the boats – one of which was from the famous Thriller Speedboat (seen here), which travels at 40mph.

Some, including the woman who had to be airlifted, appeared barely able to move, while others appeared to be fully conscious and able to follow the directions of first responders.

In total, more than 30 units responded to the crisis in the early afternoon, according to officials.

That response included an air rescue and several fire boats, along with U.S. Coast Guard and Florida Wildlife Commission vessels.

Officials did not indicate what caused the crash or provide any details about what happened.

A few hours after the crash, these officials were filmed at a dock where they parked the Thriller boat involved in the crash, which appeared to be in surprisingly good condition despite the accident.
