Nearly half of Americans want a third-party option if it’s Biden v Trump
Nearly HALF of Americans would consider supporting a third-party candidate if it’s Biden v Trump in 2024: Poll shows voters would shun Democrats and Republicans if the president, 80, and his predecessor go to war
Nearly half of Americans want a third-party president next year if Joe Biden and Donald Trump are their party’s respective nominees, a new poll released Tuesday found.
The NewsNation/DDHQ poll found that 49% said it was somewhat or very likely they would consider voting for a third-party candidate in 2024 if the election were a repeat of Biden vs. Trump.
Among the options considered, Liberal Senator Bernie Sanders received 21%, former Representative Liz Cheney received 10% and Senator Joe Manchin received 7%.
Another 43 percent said they would choose someone else as a third-party candidate.
Biden and Trump are both favored to be their party’s presidential choice.
President Biden faces symbolic competition for the Democratic nomination.
Trump has a tougher road ahead with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley already challenging him. Mike Pence and Chris Christie are also in the race.
But the former president is leading in the polls for the GOP nomination.
As for a third-party alternative, Democrats have been concerned about an alternative emerging, especially as the outside group No Labels is seeking a third-party option on the presidential ballot in all 50 states.
Some Democrats worry that No Labels’ outside candidate could play a spoiler role and peel enough moderate voters off the Democratic ticket to ensure a Republican victory.

There has been speculation that moderate Democratic Senator Joe Manchin could be a contender for the No Labels ticket.
Manchin has not said if he is running for another term as senator, let alone president.
But in an interview with CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday, he notably did not endorse Biden for a second term and did not rule out making his own run.
‘Everything is open. Everything is on the table and nothing is off the table,” he said.

Cheney also hasn’t ruled out a third-party candidate.
At the 2023 Mackinac Policy Conference in Detroit, Michigan, over the weekend, the three-term conservative was asked if she would consider a third-party campaign.
“Look, I think we have to have good people, and I don’t know what that’s going to look like yet,” she said.
“But I’m not going to rule it out,” she said.
