Nearly half (47%) of UK businesses are not confident in their website’s ability to impress customers, while 92% of UK business leaders believe their website is costing them up to £100,000 in sales each year.
This is evident from a new study (opens in new tab) from Content management system (CMS) provider Storyblok, which surveyed 500 business executives at “medium-sized” ecommerce companies in the US and Europe about the costs and revenues of their website.
On average, companies prefer to spend £336,500 on marketing over half a decade, with a quarter of companies spending £500,000 or more. it is clear that many companies still do not believe that the Internet is a valuable, profitable space.
Embarrassing website design
Another recent StoryBlok survey (opens in new tab) of 6,000 customers in the US and Europe revealed that 60% of them are forgoing about 5 online purchases per year due to poor user experience (UX) on websites.
As a result, a culture seems to be emerging among businesses in the UK and globally that an “embarrassing” website is a fact or just about good enough.
That’s a problem, says Dominik Angerer, co-founder and CEO of Storyblok, given how far web design tools have come.
“At first glance, these results seem completely contradictory. On the one hand, companies believe their websites are costly embarrassments, on the other hand, they seem satisfied with their performance. The answer is that expectations are too low.”
