Kenya Sloan, 40, of Shelby, might be the luckiest woman in the world after winning a total of $3 million in two scratch-off tickets just months apart and now plans to use her winnings to open a catering restaurant for the soul.

In August, the McDonald’s manager won $1 million on a $10 Carolina Jackpot ticket, her first time playing the game, and decided to buy land to build a house.

“I’ve been wanting to buy a house for about 15 years,” he told the shelby star in August.

In October, she bought a $20 Diamond Dazzler, another game she played for the first time, and was surprised when she once again won a lot of money.

“I told some of my family members and they couldn’t believe it either.”

After another round of beginner’s luck, Sloan has decided that her restaurant will be her next big dream to come true, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.

When Sloan arrived at lottery headquarters on Thursday to collect his prize, he decided to accept the lump sum of $1.2 million, which came out to $855,006 after taxes.

“I was just standing there in shock,” she said. ‘I feel blessed. This is all I can say.’

As for his Carolina Jackpot ticket, he also sought the lump sum of $600,000, which came to $426,063 after taxes.

In another exciting round of lottery updates, regulators have changed the number of lottery balls and expanded the winning odds for Mega Millions.

The latest loot up for grabs is a $940 million Mega Millions jackpot to be drawn on Friday, the sixth-biggest ranked prize in US history.

It comes less than two months after a player in California won a record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot and others won $1 billion worth of lottery prizes in early 2022 and 2021.

While it seems players have been gifted with repeat chances to win the big prize draws are the result of harder math and odds.

Beginners luck? Sloan had never played either game when he won. After winning the first time, he bought a piece of land and now he has almost finished building his dream house and now plans to open a soul food restaurant with his new earnings.

“It’s exciting to see the Mega Millions jackpot grow over the holidays and now into the New Year,” Pat McDonald, director of the Ohio Lottery, who also runs the state lotteries that oversee Mega Millions play, told ABC News.

In the fall of 2017, lottery officials approved changes to Mega Millions that significantly increased the odds from one in 258.9 million to one in 302.6 million.

They made similar changes to Powerball in October 2015, worsening the odds from one in 175.2 million to one in 292.2 million.

The idea was that by making jackpots less common, ticket revenue could add up week after week, creating giant jackpots that would grab players’ attention and attract more.
