NBA star Haywood Highsmith breaks down in tears in new police bodycam footage following gruesome car crash that left 21-year-old with a partially amputated leg
Haywood Highsmith appears very emotional in new police bodycam footage, which shows the NBA star in the immediate aftermath of a horror car crash in Florida last month.
The Miami Heat forward was charged with careless driving in connection with the Feb. 6 crash that left a 21-year-old man in critical condition and requiring a partial amputation of his right leg.
The new footage shows Miami-Dade police officers taking a statement from a tearful Highsmith, who tells them, “The signal lights were not on. He got out of the car and by the time he got out it was too late.”
At the time of the crash, Alekxei Pino was assisting another motorist with their disabled Toyota SUV, which had its lights off, when Highwood struck him in his 2021 Audi A5.
While trying to explain the events to an officer, Highwood, visibly shaken, bursts into tears and bends over with his head in his hands.

As a police officer checks Highwood’s Audi, the vehicle’s airbags deploy, while fire trucks spread debris all over the road and several police cars are on the scene with their emergency lights on.
Other witnesses can be heard in the background discussing the incident, with one witness saying: ‘There were no emergency lights on. Not at all.’
“It was just left in the middle,” another added, “with a blackout.”
Although the crash was not fatal, Pino was left seriously injured, resulting in an above-the-knee amputation and multiple other procedures.
Pino sued the basketball player on February 17, seeking unspecified damages estimated at more than $50,000.
His lawyer, Manuel Dobrinsky, described a “very long road of rehabilitation ahead” for Pino – who was still in hospital recovering at the time.
Pino’s family has one GoFundMe to help with his recovery process and hope to raise $100,000. More than $34,000 has already been raised.

Highwood was on his way home from the Heat’s game against the Orlando Magic at the nearby Kaseya Center around 11:30 p.m. and was traveling at 45 mph in a 40 mph zone when he collided with Pino from behind and the other vehicle, according to a police report.
Police believe drugs and alcohol were not involved, but say Highsmith may have been distracted. As a result, he was cited for reckless driving.
The Miami Heat released a statement after the crash saying their “hearts go out to those who were injured.”
Highsmith did not play in a game against the San Antonio Spurs the night after the wreck, but did return on February 11 against the Boston Celtics.
