Naughty Dog has a ‘concept’ in mind for possible The Last of Us Part 3

It will be a while before we catch even a whiff of it The Last of Us Part 3 but it looks like the gears are already shifting at Naughty Dog for a possible sequel The Last of Us Part 2.

Indicated by IGNseries writer and director Neil Druckmann reflected on the future of the popular PlayStation series near the end of the series Grounded 2: Making of The Last of Us part 2 documentary. Druckmann speaks about the finality of Part 2, which states: “If we are never allowed to do it again, this is a nice ending. Last bite of the apple, the story is over.”

However, Druckmann also seems to imply something of a ‘never say never’ attitude, confirming that he already has some ideas for a possible solution. The Last of Us Part 3.

“I just thought about it, ‘is there a concept there?’ And for years I haven’t been able to find that concept,” Druckmann says of a future third entry in the series.

“But recently that has changed, and I don’t have a story, but I do have this concept that to me is as exciting as 1, as exciting as 2, stands alone, and yet has a through line for all three. It feels so like there’s probably another chapter to this story.”

Druckmann also poured cold water on the idea The Last of Us Part 3 aimed at Joel’s brother, Tommy, who stated that reports on the matter were “actually wrong”.

“It was always a small story, it was never a full title,” Druckmann clarifies. “At that time, we at Naughty Dog had higher priorities to fix our pipeline, to solve work-life balance issues. Just based on where we were, I didn’t want to prioritize the story, so that story was shelved. And I still believe that one day it will see the light of day. I don’t know if it’ll be a game or a show, tbd.”

Whether Tommy’s story is ultimately part of The Last of Us Part 3 whether a possible side plot for the TV show or otherwise, remains up in the air. All we know for sure is that series fans are excited for a third entry in the post-apocalyptic series; we’ll just have to wait and see if Naughty Dog can grow anything past this extremely early conceptual stage.
