Manchester City face their bogey team on Monday, with Nathan Aké hailing the role of Pep Guardiola’s new boys in keeping the team hungry for more trophies.

City won a historic Treble last season but there wasn’t much respite as they chased a record fourth successive win in the competition.

Ake points out that summer signings Jeremey Doku, Josep Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes are yet to win silverware at The Etihad, highlighting their motivation.

And revenge will be on the minds of every Pep Guardiola player who were surprisingly beaten twice by Thomas Frank’s Brentford last season as they overwhelmed all their other opponents.

“Our desire to win never ends. Those moments when we won five trophies in 2023 are special. Once you do it, you want to do it again,” said the Dutch defender.

“We lost a few players this summer, but the new boys who have come in have increased that hunger. They are desperate for their own success with us and that contributes to us being a winning side.

‘Brentford are a top side who are organised, aggressive and look to win their games. We know it’s going to be a very difficult match because it’s always against them and we have to be ready for it.

“We’re in good form and feeling good at the moment, so we have to keep that momentum going and just focus on ourselves and what we can do.”

Erling Haaland is set for his first City start since recovering from a foot injury. In the opposite corner, Brentford recently welcomed their star striker Ivan Toney following his gambling ban.

“Having a top striker and someone who puts the ball in the net can make the difference,” Aké acknowledged. “Ivan Toney is a very important player for Brentford and we are so happy with Erling.

“Erling has already proven that he is one of the best strikers in the world and it was great to have him back with us in training and to see him back on the pitch against Burnley on Wednesday.

“I know it’s frustrating for him, but he’s back and we’re very happy to have him with us to help the team.”
